Congressional Budget Office
Positions Available in the Financial Analysis & Macroeconomic Analysis Divisions

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO), a small nonpartisan agency that provides independent and objective budgetary and economic analysis to the Congress, seeks candidates for several economist positions in the Financial Analysis and Macroeconomic Analysis Divisions.

The Financial Analysis Division is seeking talented candidates for a position that involves developing valuation models and conducting economic and policy analyses of federal and private-sector financial activities. A focus of the division's work in this area is to evaluate the costs, risks, and economic and budgetary consequences of a wide range of federal financial obligations, including loans and loan guarantees, deposit insurance, pension guarantees, and mortgage guarantees.

POSITIONS AVAILABLE IN THE FINANCIAL ANALYSIS DIVISION: Financial Economist to develop valuation models and conduct economic and policy analyses of federal and private-sector financial activities. Specialty in asset pricing, derivatives valuation and/or financial econometrics would be helpful.
- Financial Modeler for a limited term position of 6-12 months to support research and policy analyses of federal and private financial activity. Applicants should be knowledgeable about the use of derivative pricing and have a master's degree in finance or equivalent and broad training in financial valuation and econometric techniques and their applications.

The Macroeconomic Analysis Division analyzes the macroeconomic effects of federal fiscal policy, studies emerging developments in the economy, and prepares CBO's semi-annual economic forecast. In the past few years, the division has analyzed a wide range of issues, including policies to promote short-term and long-term economic growth, the effect of deficit reduction on the economy, the implications of changing demographics in the United States, and the macroeconomic effects of tax, Social Security, and Medicare reform.

POSITIONS AVAILABLE IN THE MACROECONOMIC ANALYSIS DIVISION: Macroeconomist with a broad range of interests, including public finance and fiscal policy, to construct and improve cutting-edge models that underlie CBO's policy analyses. Experience in building general equilibrium models and analyzing the effects of fiscal policy is a plus.
- International Economist preferably with knowledge of international financial markets, and experience in analyzing movements in exchange rates, capital flows, and trade deficits.

JOB DESCRIPTION: The successful candidates for these positions will contribute to CBO's economic forecast, will help to construct and improve models that underlie CBO's policy analyses, and will prepare longer-term CBO studies, shorter-term memoranda, and Congressional testimonies. Analysts are also encouraged to turn CBO projects and independent research into CBO working papers and outside publications. All positions are located in Washington, DC.
