Li Ka Shing Visiting Professor of Practice - Call for Applications 2018-2019

The Li Ka Shing Visiting Professor of Practice Program provides the opportunity for exceptional scholars and experienced professionals in the fields of comparative law and Asian legal cultures, including expertise in the interplay between Western and Asian legal traditions - to spend six months teaching and researching at the Faculty of Law at McGill University. Top-tier international scholars and international practitioners from Asia or elsewhere are invited to apply for this prestigious short-term appointment.

ABOUT THE FACULTY OF LAW: The McGill's Faculty of Law's research programs, pedagogical initiatives, and academic priorities reflect a central commitment to legal traditions, comparative law and internationalization of law. Our double-degree curriculum, leading to award of the Bachelor of Civil Law (B.C.L.) and Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degrees, represents an international benchmark for contemporary legal education. The core of this curriculum is taught in an integrated manner. Our graduate program comprises research degrees at the Master's and Doctoral levels. The Faculty is home to a vibrant trans-disciplinary research community of institutes and centres. Faculty members typically teach and research in several substantive fields of law, from a variety of theoretical, critical, and methodological perspectives.

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Faculty will welcome the Li Ka Shing Visiting Professor of Practice into campus life and encourage him or her to engage with students, professors, and the broader community. He or she will teach one three-credit course (39 hours). The topic of the course will be decided with the associate dean (academic) and the dean. The Li Ka Shing Professor of Practice will also be asked to guest lecture in other McGill courses, to supervise student research projects, to lecture in public venues, to network, and to promote research, bringing an invaluable "real-world" perspective to scholarship in the area of comparative legal practice and Asian legal cultures.

During their stay at McGill, the Li Ka Shing Professor of Practice will make one two-week visit to Shantou University Law School (Shantou, Guangdong Province, China) to offer workshops, lectures and other opportunities for intellectual exchange with Shantou University faculty and students.

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT: The successful candidate will be appointed Li Ka Shing Visiting Professor of Practice at McGill for the duration of his or her visit and will receive up to 80,000 CAD for a six-month visit, beginning in June 2018 or January 2019.

This compensation will be provided in the form of a salary. The recipient will pay all expenses related to the visit to McGill out of that compensation, except for the costs of the visit(s) to Shantou University. The Faculty of Law will cover the costs of one two-week visit to Shantou University Law School during each term spent at McGill, up to 15,000 CAD per visit.

All appointments are subject to available funding.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS: McGill University's Faculty of Law invites applications from candidates with a strong commitment to innovation and excellence in teaching and research.

Applicants should have a graduate degree in law. Established senior academics and candidates outside academia with recognized professional standing and substantial professional accomplishments are also eligible.

Applicants should have demonstrated proficiency in English or French. Chinese language skills are not required for the visit to Shantou University Law School, where activities can be conducted in English.
