Misstatement, insider trading and market manipulation, the number of civil suits brought by aggrieved investors is increasing and private enforcement procedures against securities market misconduct have become a significant topic in China. Questions remain, however, as to how key civil suits issues should be addressed. For instance, the scope of action available to the plaintiffs, the calculation of damages, the evaluation of civil suits success rates or the assessment of how civil proceedings interact with public enforcement actions by the regulators.

In this context, the Faculty of Law at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK Law) has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow position, under its Impact Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme. Applicants are expected to work with Professor Robin Huang to produce research with a demonstrable impact for the legal community, non-governmental organisations and other beneficiaries.

This appointment is designed to cultivate early-stage academics with a keen interest in making a significant ‘Impact’ on society. Impact is defined “as the demonstrable contributions, beneficial effects, valuable changes or advantages that research qualitatively brings to the economy, society, culture, public policy or services, health, the environment or quality of life; and that are beyond the academia.” The notion of ‘Impact’ is becoming a major aspect of Research, as evidenced by the increasing emphasis put on impact in the Research Excellent Framework (REF) in the United Kingdom and the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in Hong Kong. Hence, the selected applicant will be expected to take part in designing and conducting research in innovative ways, with a view to have a positive effect on identified beneficiaries.

Applicants should have (i) a PhD degree obtained within the last five years in Law, Economics, relevant business-school areas (e.g. Finance, Accounting), Political Science or Sociology; (ii) the capacity to interact with the industry and/or policy-makers; (iii) a strong command of English and Chinese; and (iv) a good command of statistics.

Responsibilities of the appointee are exclusively research-related and consist in working under the supervision of the Principal Investigator. Duties include (a) writing research reports and publishing in reputable academic outlets; (b) hosting workshops to present findings; (c) organizing and liaising with identified beneficiaries.

Appointment will initially be made on contract basis for one year commencing June 2019, renewable subject to good performance, funding availability and mutual agreement.
