Associate Senior Lecturer in International Law

Job Description & Qualification

International law is one of the academic disciplines at the Swedish Defence University’s Department for Security, Strategy and Leadership (ISSL). The Department consists of four sections and four centres.

The advertised position is within the Centre for International and Operational Law (CIOL). CIOL is responsible for teaching and research in international and domestic operational law, which includes the law on the use of force (jus ad bellum), the law of armed conflict (jus in bello), human rights law, the international law of peace and crisis management operations, Swedish total defence law and the international law of responsibility.

Professional Role

The advertised position involves teaching and research in international operational law. A specific task will be to contribute to the internationalisation of research and teaching, to the development and implementation of a new LL.M. programme in international and operational law and to the development of an increased digitalization of CIOL’s work. The position also involves some administrative tasks at CIOL.

Eligibility Requirements

The eligibility requirements for the position of Associate Senior Lecturer are governed by Section 4 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance and the SEDU Appointments regulation, Section 6.6. Accordingly those eligible for appointment are those who have a doctoral degree (PhD), or can demonstrate equivalent scientific qualifications in international operational law. The doctoral degree or equivalent scientific qualifications should have been obtained no longer than five years prior to the date of the application deadline, unless specific reasons such as illness, parental leave or similar conditions justify otherwise.

Criteria for Selection

The ability to meet the following criteria will strengthen your application (overall assessment):

Teaching experience, preferably in an international context and in English;
Experience with, and enthusiasm for, the use of digital media in teaching and research;
Prior work experience within the humanitarian or military sector or within an international organization;
Peer-reviewed publications in English in the field of international operational law beyond the PhD.
All teachers at SEDU are required to have successfully completed the course in higher education pedagogy (högskolepedagogik) at the latest 18 months after their appointment. If comparable pedagogical qualifications have already been acquired, this requirement may be waived.

This is a full-time appointment for an initial period of four years. Associate Senior Lecturers may be promoted to a tenured Senior Lectureship upon positive review after this initial period.

Each application will be reviewed by two subject-matter experts. In addition, the Swedish Defence University may request a trial lecture and an interview during the selection process.
