Terms of employment

PhD candidates will be employed by Tilburg University, which is one of the best non-profit employers in the Netherlands and has an excellent policy concerning terms of employment. The appointment is intended to lead to the completion of a PhD dissertation.
The appointment will be for the total of 48 months. The selected candidates will initially be appointed for 16 months, with an extension for the following 32 months based on a positive evaluation. The evaluation will take place after about 12 months.

During the first year, you will receive extensive training in theory and methods by taking several PhD-level courses. For the remaining three years, 80% of the position’s time will be dedicated to the completion of your PhD research, and 20% to the acquisition of academic skills through teaching courses and supervising master/bachelor theses within the department.

The appointed PhD candidate will be an employee of Tilburg University. The starting gross salary is
€ 2,541 per month (for a full-time appointment) in the first year, up to € 3,247 in the final year. In addition, there is a holiday allowance (8% of the annual salary, in May), and end-of-year bonus (8.3% of the annual salary, in December).

All university employees are covered by the so-called civil servants pension fund (ABP). Researchers from outside the Netherlands may qualify for a tax-free allowance equal to 30% of their taxable salary. The university will apply for such an allowance on their behalf. The university offers very good fringe benefits (it is one of the best non-profit employers in the Netherlands), such as an options model for terms and conditions of employment and excellent reimbursement of moving expenses.

Requirements
We look for ambitious, intellectually curious, and hard-working students who want to become leading scholars or contribute to public or private institutions. Applicants should have a strong background in economics or business, an aptitude to critical and creative thinking, and a strong motivation.

Candidates should possess the following requirements:
- An high quality Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in business (finance), econometrics, or economics.
- Excellent academic record (top 10% of their class).
- A recent GMAT or GRE test score;
- Proficiency in English, (TOEFL above 100, or IETLS above 7.0)
- At least two academic letters of reference, a personal motivation letter, and an up-to-date CV.

5. Proof of English proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL, etc.). You can get an exemption for the English language test if you have completed a 3-years Academic Bachelor’s program (of at least 180 ECTS credits) fully taught in English at an accredited research university.
6. GRE or GMAT score. You do not need to provide a GRE or GMAT test score if you have obtained a European university Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field with GPA>=8.

About the program:
The PhD program consists of 1.5 years of graduate level coursework, followed by 2.5 years of dissertation research. The coursework covers microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics as well as field courses in corporate finance, asset pricing, banking, behavioral finance, and advanced topics in finance. CentER’s graduate school offers a broad choice of advanced courses in economics, including behavioral and experimental, (financial) econometrics, accounting, and strategy. The PhD phase trains students to develop original scholarly research at the frontiers of financial economics. All courses are taught in English.
