Job Description & Qualification

The PhD program in Business Administration at Saint Mary’s University is seeking applicants with exceptional academic credentials and the drive to excel at scholarly research. The program has three specializations: Accounting, Finance, and Management.

PROGRAM DETAILS: Our PhD is a full-time program that offers training in a variety of disciplines related to studies in business administration and emphasizes the skills necessary to integrate various approaches and develop coherent and cutting-edge research. We provide a collaborative, supportive and intellectually stimulating research environment for discovery and dissemination of scientific knowledge applicable to the business community. Students will develop the theoretical and methodological skills required to participate and publish at the highest standards of the international scientific community.

Our first-year students acquire a broad set of theoretical and methodological skills relevant to various fields in accounting finance, and/or management studies through a series of common compulsory courses, and attend courses specific to their stream curriculum, and begin developing their own research. In the second year, our students mainly attend a series of field and elective courses and continue developing their research work. Upon completion of foundational and functional course work requirements (usually within the first two years), student prepare for and complete comprehensive examinations. Years three and forward are entirely dedicated to research and dissertation development.

Faculty members are leading scholars in their fields. They contribute to the international scholarly debate by publishing in and serving the editorial boards of research journals, such as: Academy of Management Journal; Strategic Management Journal; Organization Science; Management Science; Academy of Management Review; The Accounting Review; Accounting, Organizations and Society; Journal of Accounting and Economics; Contemporary Accounting Research; Journal of Corporate Finance; Journal of Finance; and many others.
Visiting professors and guest research speakers from top international business schools complement our permanent Faculty. Sobey School of Business has an active research seminars series.


QUALIFICATIONS:

The PhD Program offers 3-4 admissions with a fellowship in each stream of the PhD in Business Administration: Accounting, Finance, and Management.

Application Procedure

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: To apply for our PhD program, only our online application portal may be used.
Applications are due by 15 February 2023.

The assessment of the applicant is based on:
1. Personal curriculum: full CV
2. Academic records: transcript of exams and certification of undergraduate and graduate degrees awarded and final grade (if any); if the graduate program has not been completed, an enrolment document with the full study plan, the exams taken, and the grades achieved
3. International Graduate Admission Tests scores: the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). A GMAT or GRE score is a mandatory part of this application, and should be no less than 5 year old.
4. Research statement/personal statement: short description (max 1200 words) of your motivation for enrolment in this PhD program, your research interests, and professional goals.
5. Reference letters: up to three reference letters uploaded by referees appointed in the online application portal.
6. Other relevant documents (maximum five): e.g., publications, professional accounting designation, other programs attended, etc.
