Call for Papers - Conference on CSR, the Economy and Financial Markets
November 11 - 12, 2021, Tokyo, Japan

Sponsored by Global Finance Journal
Organized by Global Finance Journal, Development Bank of Japan & Japan Economic Research Institute

Following the success of the first three conferences on “CSR, the Economy and Financial Market” in Tokyo (2017), Chicago (2018) and Düsseldorf (2019), the Fourth Conference returns to Tokyo and to the Development Bank of Japan. (It was originally scheduled in November 2020, but due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was postponed to 2021.) The conference aims to foster research and dialogue with regard the economic effects of corporate social responsibility. We invite the submission of theoretical or empirical papers that deal with the effects of CSR from a purely economic perspective, a financial management view, or a markets vantage. Papers dealing with CSR reporting and disclosure are also invited. At the author's discretion, accepted papers will qualify for a fast-track review for possible publication in a special issue of the Global Finance Journal with the journal's submission fee waived. Professor Lukas Roth will serve as the Guest-Editor of this special issue.
The topics relevant to the conference include but are not limited to theoretical and empirical papers dealing with:
1. The role of banks, institutional investors, and financial markets in CSR
2. The effects of CSR on valuation, financial performance, cost of capital, funding and capital structure
3. Corporate governance and CSR
4. Risk management and CSR
5. CSR reporting and disclosure
6. Integrated reporting

Lukas Roth, University of Alberta

The conference will have a workshop format to allow for extensive discussion and feedback. Accordingly, a small number of papers will be accepted for presentation. The conference is scheduled to begin in the morning of Thursday, November 11, and conclude in the afternoon of Friday, November 12 (Japan time).

Considering the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide, the conference will be held in a hybrid format with the participants choosing the form of their attendance: online or in-person. However, in case of difficulty in ensuring participants’ safety, the conference will be held in an online-only format. The organizers will determine the feasibility and details of on-site gathering and announce their decision by mid- to late- September. For additional information on COVID-19 situation in Japan please see DBJ-RICF’s website below.

Deadline for submission of completed papers is August 31st, 2021 and acceptance decisions will be sent by September 30th, 2021. The final version of the paper should be submitted no later than October 15th, 2021.

All submission should be made at:

Original and completed manuscripts in English, and in PDF format, should begin with a title page that includes the names, e-mail addresses, and affiliations of all authors as well as a 200-word abstract and key words. A blinded copy of the paper should also accompany the submission in the form of a PDF file.

All attendees are required to register for the conference by completing the registration form. (Registration fees for the 2021 Conference have been waived.) The details of the registration procedure will be available by early September 2021.
