Call for Papers, First Annual Conference on Digital Economy, Luohan Academy

Conference dates

21 Jun 2019 - 26 Jun 2019

Hangzhou, China

Luohan Academy is planning to host its annual conference on digital economy in Hangzhou, China, after the third week of June, 2019 (most likely for two days between June 21st-26th). The academy was established in June 2018 by the Alibaba Group and its academic committee, including six Nobel laureates. It is an open research institute dedicated to understanding the economic and social impact of digital technology. It released its first report at the WEF in January 2019, titled Digital Technology and Inclusive Growth.

The conference will serve as an open platform for the world’s leading academic researchers, business practitioners, and policy makers to share their latest findings, sharpen their ideas, and promote the development of digital technology for the well-being of humanity.

To understand the impact of digital technology—mobile internet, big data, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, blockchain, etc.—on the economy, business, and society, we welcome submission of research that ranges broadly across economics, finance, law, psychology, and other social sciences, and pursue an interdisciplinary approach. The potential topics include, but not restricted to, the relation between digital technology and economic growth, inequality, employment, competition policy, privacy and data governance, finance, platform, public and private governance, and other social issues.

All submissions will be peer-reviewed, and decisions will be made by the academic committee of Luohan Academy. The committee consists of the following members: Patrick Bolton, Markus Brunnermeier, Lars Peter Hansen, Zhiguo He, Bengt Holmström, Preston McAfee, Christopher Pissarides, Yingyi Qian, Alvin Roth, Thomas Sargent, Michael Spence, Steve Tadelis, Neng Wang, Shangjin Wei, Wei Xiong, and Chenggang Xu. We will reimburse transportation and accommodation expenses for selected authors and invited discussants.

Zhiguo He (University of Chicago), Wei Xiong (Princeton University), and Long Chen (Director, Luohan Academy) will be responsible for organizing the conference.

We encourage deep exchange of ideas between the best minds and entrepreneurs from some of the best technology companies. All presenters will have an opportunity to participate in a group tour of Alibaba’s headquarters, and exchange view with dozens of entrepreneurs at Hupan School of Entrepreneurship, which contains some of the best unicorns that are reshaping the digital economy in China.

The deadline for submitting paper is April 1, 2019. All submissions and queries should be sent to Decision will be made by April 15th.
