Call for Papers on Asia’s Agriculture-Livestock-Forestry Nexus: Prospects for Improving Farmers’ Livelihoods, Soil Health, and Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation

Conference dates

19 Apr 2023 - 21 Apr 2023

Location

Tokyo, Japan

Description

Crop-livestock-tree integration (agroforestry system) forms the agriculture-livestock-forestry nexus, with the individual components interrelated in terms of degree, complexity, trade-offs, and synergy. Such dynamics can improve farmers’ livelihoods, soil health, biodiversity, and ecosystem services; increase labor-use efficiency; and decrease farming risks. They can also support climate adaptation and mitigation and the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI) is seeking original research or comprehensive review papers on Asia’s agriculture-livestock-forestry nexus, with a focus on the prospects for improving farmers’ livelihoods, soil health, and climate change adaptation and mitigation. Selected papers will be featured during an ADBI conference and considered for inclusion in a special issue of Agricultural System, an SSCI journal with a current impact factor of 6.765.

Paper topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
・Understanding the complexity, diversity, trade-offs, and synergy of agriculture-livestock-forest integration and their contribution to increasing global food and nutrition security and farmers’ income from smallholders and commercial farms
・Soil health improvement through soil fertility enhancement and carbon sequestration
・Enhancement in atmospheric carbon removal by trees and climate change adaptation and mitigation
・Increasing biodiversity, maintaining ecosystem services, increasing labor-use efficiency, decreasing risk, and enhancing farmer, system, and climate change resilience
・Demonstrations of system linkages and contributions toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals
・Policies addressing the agriculture-livestock-forest nexus
・Comparative data or Asia-non-Asia country-level assessments
・Research-based theoretical papers that explore the policy implications for Asia

Submission Procedure

・Authors should submit their full papers (maximum 8,000 words) via the Agricultural System portal (www.editorialmanager.com/agsy/default2.aspx) by 28 February 2023. Please select “Agriculture-Livestock-Forestry Nexus” when choosing the submission type. There are no submission fees.
・Paper submissions must be original and neither currently published nor under consideration for publication elsewhere. Papers must also comply with the Agricultural System author guide (www.elsevier.com/journals/agricultural-systems/0308-521x/guide-for-authors).
・All submissions will be subject to double-blind peer review and editorial processes in accordance with Agricultural System policies.
・All manuscripts must fit within both the scope of the journal (www.sciencedirect.com/journal/agricultural-systems) and the aim of this special issue.

Arrangements for Selected Papers

・Authors of selected papers will be invited to present their work at the related ADBI conference in Tokyo on 19-21 April 2023.
・ADBI will provide travel support to one author per paper. The author must be a citizen of an Asian Development Bank member economy (www.adb.org/who-we-are/about#accordion-0-0).
・The conference will be held virtually in the event of COVID-19 travel disruptions.
・Final decisions about the publication of selected papers in the journal special issue will be made following the conference.
