2022 University of Melbourne Finance Doctoral Information Session

On Thursday 29 September 2022, the Department of Finance at the University of Melbourne will hold an online information session outlining the Department’s doctoral program in Finance.

Our world-class program begins with two years of advanced course work in finance, economics, econometrics, mathematics, and statistics. Dissertation supervision is provided by the Department’s faculty. The faculty regularly publish in the leading Finance and Economics journals. Generous scholarships, fee waivers, conference attendance reimbursement, and a research allowance are available throughout the program.

The Department of Finance at the University of Melbourne wants to attract the very best doctoral candidates to study with us. The Department has an experienced group of senior faculty (Professors Carole Comerton-Forde, John Handley, Carsten Murawski, Federico Nardari and Garry Twite) and a wonderful group of young graduates from Alabama, Arizona State, Tel Aviv, Bocconi, Warwick, Georgia State, UC Santa Barbara, University of Texas at Austin, Kellogg, ESSEC, Cambridge Judge Business School, Tilburg, Columbia, Konstanz, Melbourne, Wharton, Zurich, University of Washington, University of Minnesota, Ohio State, Penn State, Monash, Newcastle, Tsukuba, UNSW, NYU and Cornell.

The information session will be presented by five Department of Finance faculty members and will cover:
• The structure of the Finance PhD program
• The research and publications of the Department’s faculty members
• The Department’s weekly seminar series and annual Finance Down Under Conference
• The Department’s large set of databases
• The application procedure
• The funding, support, and placement of our doctoral students.

We will be presenting three information sessions, targeting different time zones:
SESSION 1 - Melbourne: 29 September, 9am to 12noon AEST
Los Angeles and Vancouver: 28 September, 4pm to 7pm | New York and Toronto: 28 September, 7pm to 10pm
SESSION 2 - Melbourne: 29 September, 1pm to 4pm AEST
Singapore and Shanghai: 29 September, 11am to 2pm | New Delhi: 29 September, 8.30am to 11.30am
SESSION 3 - Melbourne: 29 September, 7pm to 10pm AEST
London: 29 September, 10am to 1pm | Frankfurt: 29 September, 11am to 2pm

Up to 15 applicants will be selected to attend each online session. If you wish to attend, please send an email to
Maree Cassar (maree.cassar@unimelb.edu.au) with Melbourne Finance Doctoral Information Session in the subject line. The brief application email should include a pdf attachment that contains:
1. Your CV including your contact details
2. A maximum one-page description of a research project undertaken as part of your current or past studies or employment
3. A maximum one-page statement of interest in future doctoral studies in finance

Closing date for applications: 5pm AEST Friday 23 September

Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application by Monday 26 September and must confirm their attendance by Wednesday 28 September. A Zoom invitation will be forwarded following confirmation.
