International Center for the Study of Research Paper Series

ICSR was founded in 2019 to engage with the expert community in research evaluation and societal impact and to conduct and support research in the field. ICSR was tasked with reviewing and advancing the evaluation of research across all fields of knowledge production. Working closely with the research community, the Center drew on interconnected disciplines of research evaluation, bibliometrics and scientometrics, science of science, science and technology studies, and the science of team science to advise, (co)develop and share knowledge within, across and beyond these areas.

Recognising the importance of research evaluation and societal impact to the communities that Elsevier serves, from 2024 the work of ICSR was integrated into an existing Elsevier department known as the Research Collaboration Unit (RCU).

This research series presents key aspects of the work of the ICSR, which supported the conversation, offered new perspectives and informed the research community on topics relating to research evaluation.

Among ICSR publications, there are two key series:

ICSR Reports showcase the research and work that ICSR and its partners were doing together to solve problems relating to research evaluation and to advance the measurement of broader impact of research on society.

ICSR Perspectives is a series of short reports from ICSR which offered insights and new perspectives and which informed the research community of topics relating to research evaluation. In line with the remit of the ICSR, the scope of the series is broad, including topics such as research metrics and indicators, the varied types of research impact, trends in scholarly publishing and more.
