American University's Center for Latin American & Latino Studies (CLALS) was established in 2010 as a campus-wide initiative to advance and disseminate state-of-the-art research. Our faculty affiliates and partners are at the forefront of efforts to understand such questions as economic development, democratic governance, cultural diversity, peace and diplomacy, health, education, environmental well-being, and other topics of regional importance. CLALS generates high quality, timely analysis on these issues in partnership with researchers and practitioners from American University and beyond, intended to contribute to societal debate and policy innovation. In the process, we work with academic institutions, think tanks, non-governmental and community organizations, and governmental agencies throughout the United States and Latin America. CLALS also maintains several programs to support graduate student research and education as well as scholars of Latin America. Contributors to the CLALS Working Paper Series can include faculty affiliates at American University, CLALS research fellows, and partners from beyond the university in ongoing center projects. The CLALS Working Paper Series is intended to provide an opportunity for the timely presentation of ongoing research and scholarship that bridges and catalyzes dialogue between scholarly, policy, and practitioner communities.
