The Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission (COSO) is a joint initiative of five private sector organizations (American Accounting Association, American Institute of CPA's, Financial Executives International, The Institute of Management Accountants, and The Institute of Internal Auditors) organized in 1985 to provide thought leadership through the development of comprehensive frameworks and guidance on enterprise risk management, internal control and fraud deterrence. Initially established to study the causal factors that can lead to fraudulent financial reporting, COSO's mission is designed to improve organizational performance and governance and to reduce the extent of fraud in organizations. JOB DESCRIPTION: COSO is actively seeking a replacement for its current chairman for a three-year term beginning January 1, 2018; this is a part-time stipend position. The essential responsibilities of this role include the following:
- Plan and lead periodic COSO board meetings, primarily aimed at developing and agreeing on strategies and current and anticipated activities responsive to the COSO mission.
- Solicit and engage individuals and organizations interested in working on COSO research and development and updates of COSO Frameworks, thought papers and other publications.
- Actively seek opportunities for press interviews and participation as a speaker in forums, webinars and conferences of COSO sponsoring organizations and other professional groups.
- Oversight of COSO's outsourced administrative activities including but not limited to financial, legal and translation services.
- Promote positive relationships with those global professional organizations, regulators and other stakeholders who interrelate or potentially interrelate with COSO or otherwise have a common interest with the three subjects of COSO's mission.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will possess top management leadership experience with a background that involves having skills in our mission subjects and national recognition among organizations and regulators that interact with COSO. Prior Board leadership experience with significant management and supervisory/executive responsibility in organizations relevant to COSO's disciplines (risk management, internal controls, fraud deterrence) is required. The successful candidate will also be a self starter with excellent communication, diplomacy, organizational skills, and a personal drive/commitment to ensure effective execution of the position's responsibilities.
