In cooperation with Pan African University Institute for Water and Energy Sciences (PAUWES), with support from the German Government, and in cooperation with a consortium of German universities (UNU-EHS, ZEF and ITT) led by UNU-EHS and the University Abou Bekr Belkaid in Tlemcen, the Sustainability Research & Policy Network (SRPN) is pleased to announce the PAUWES Research-2-Practice Forum 2018. This eJournal is available to all subscribers at no charge and contains abstracts of the meeting papers with links to the full text in the SSRN eLibrary.

The Pan African University Institute of Water and Energy Sciences (including climate change) (PAUWES) held the Research to Practice Forum on 16th - 18th April, 2018 in Tlemcen, Algeria. The forum was organized jointly by the PAUWES with support from the German Government and in cooperation with a consortium of German universities (UNU-EHS, ZEF and ITT) led by the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) and the University Abou Bekr Belkaid in Tlemcen. The forum provided a platform for experts/scientists, education leaders, decision makers, entrepreneurs, private and public sector, policy makers, civil society actors and institutions interested or active in applied and practice-oriented research for development to discuss state of the art, challenges and innovative solutions in the areas of renewable energy, water security and climate change and build strategic partnerships in Africa. The forum further provided a link between research and development as contributions to achieve goals of the agenda 2063 which is a priority for the Pan African University (PAU) of the African Union.

The scene was set by two keynote presentations on the "AU Context on Education, Applied Research and Evidence Based policy for Agenda 2063" by Dr. Njenga, and "Technological Innovations in Africa: Tech-Hub as driver of innovation and Changes in Africa" by Ms. Akeledo. Notable speakers on "Applied Research and Research to Practice in Africa" included the UNESCO Division of Water Science Coordinator NEPAD Networks of Water Centers of Excellence, the Director of Africa Energy Commission (AFREC), representative of the Islamic and African Development Bank, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and venture capital experts. With over 180 participants and 40% women representation, the conference had representation from different African countries and other regions. The attending research and practice experts represented institutions, organizations, companies, and policy experts in water and energy sectors.

Notable outcomes of the conference included collaboration and partnership with PAUWES and innovation hubs such as AfriLabs to develop students' master thesis projects into viable products and business cases that can be leveraged and implemented in the students' home countries. Additionally, the proposition to host PAUWES students for internship programs was welcome by the attending organizations. For instance, African Water Association (AfWA) through its pool of 3000 members and Islamic Development Bank proposed internship opportunities for PAUWES students of the water track. Further appertained to the conference results was the development of a database for grant opportunities for graduates, postgraduates in the areas of water, energy and climate in Africa. Seven compelling project ideas which were highly realistic and achievable within a maximum period of three years were discussed and drafted jointly by experts and students thus building a good basis for potential cooperation. Contemporaneously, the forum contributed to consolidating and improving the PAUWES Research Agenda by coalescing research practitioners and practice-oriented experts. Overall, the forum strengthened PAUWES key role in providing scientific and technological solutions to support sustainable socio-economic development in the continent, science-based advice to policy makers at a local, national, regional and Pan-African level. It notably improved the integration of PAUWES into scientific networks in Africa and beyond whilst establishing PAUWES as a Pan-African (and beyond) hub/platform in the topics of water, energy, climate change and their nexus.
