We are pleased to announce the creation of the Materials Science Research Network (MatSciRN), which focuses on 12 major areas of scholarship. SSRN's newest network provides a worldwide online community for materials science scholars and for the sharing of ideas across a broad spectrum of early stage research.

MatSciRN is an open platform where materials science researchers can freely post and freely download research. It hosts early stage research including preprints, conference papers, and working papers from researchers around the world. We are pleased to announce that Acta Materialia, Inc., an international consortium of materials science societies and organizations, is the sponsor for this new open materials science research sharing space.

"As a nonprofit seeking to support the entire broad materials research community, Acta Materialia, Inc. is delighted to be partnering to launch MatSciRN, a new platform that will help the community rapidly disseminate new knowledge and proliferate discussion about materials science and engineering," says Prof. Christopher A. Schuh, Department Head of Materials Science and Engineering at MIT and Coordinating Editor of the Acta Materialia family of journals. In addition to sponsoring the network, Acta Materialia, Inc. is sharing free access to preprints of their four leading materials science journals, Acta Materialia, Acta Biomaterialia, Scripta Materialia, and Materialia, as part of SSRN's First Look program.

The aim behind the Acta Materialia, Inc. First Look is to:
  • provide a venue for Acta Materialia, Inc. journals’ authors to host preprints of their work;
  • allow authors to showcase their research results prior to review and publication, thus aiming to speed up the dissemination process;
  • provide readers with an insight into groundbreaking work before it has been published as well as allow them to post comments on the work.

Gregg Gordon, SSRN Managing Director, likens the Acta Materialia sponsorship with SSRN's MatSciRN and Acta Materialia First Look journal partnership to "first rough drafts in the making of history." He says, "this is such an incredible opportunity to invoke interdisciplinary exchanges amongst researchers at an early stage by creating an open access dialogue to share ideas that one day could ultimately change the world."

Shirley Decker-Lucke, SSRN Content Director, said "the opportunity to combine the prestigious Acta Materialia with SSRN's MatSciRN and a journal First Look rollout creates wonderful momentum for serving researchers in this important and growing discipline. Here researchers can encounter other people working in materials science and also discover research in overlapping areas such as chemistry, engineering, and biomedical research in a free sharing environment. I look forward to adding other journals to the MatSciRN First Look program and to seeing how MatSciRN can help speed and improve the dissemination of materials science research."
