Academic Appointment in Indigenous Scholarship and Teaching

The Faculty of Law at Western University invites applications for a full-time faculty member to enhance its scholarship and teaching in fields related to Indigenous and/or Aboriginal Law. This may include, but is not limited to, Indigenous legal traditions, constitutional law, property law, environmental law, international law, and human rights.

JOB DESCRIPTION/QUALIFICATIONS: The Appointment may be a probationary (tenure-track) appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor or a tenured appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, depending on qualifications and experience. Candidates may also be considered for Limited Term appointment, with rank to be determined by qualifications and experience.

Qualified applicants must have a JD, LLB or equivalent degree, as well as a relevant advanced graduate degree or equivalent. Western Law welcomes candidates with graduate degrees or research expertise in Law or other related fields, including Political Science, Sociology, History, Anthropology, or Geography. Where mutually beneficial, applicants may be considered for cross-appointment with First Nations Studies.

The appointment is expected to commence July 1, 2018, although alternative starting dates may be arranged.

Candidates considered for a probationary appointment must have a superior academic record and a demonstrated record of, or a strong potential for, excellence in scholarly research and teaching. In addition, they should have the ability and willingness to contribute to the intellectual and scholarly life of the Faculty community and to the University more generally. Candidates considered for appointments with tenure must have an outstanding academic record with a strong record of publications in academic outlets and significant experience in teaching. The successful applicant will, ideally, be involved in the recruitment and mentorship of Indigenous law students, and will be expected to teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate law students, establish a productive research program, and provide leadership in the Faculty of Law. As a law school, we believe that we have a responsibility to enhance the participation of Indigenous law students and lawyers, and to teach all our students about the distinctive place of Indigenous peoples and cultures within the Canadian legal system.
