The 2017 Research Forum of the European Society of International Law (ESIL) took place on 30-31 March 2017 at the University of Granada. An ESIL Research Forum is a scholarly conference which promotes engagement with research in progress by members of the Society, targeting in particular scholars at an early stage of their careers, especially advanced PhD students and post-doctoral researchers. The theme of the forum was "The Neutrality of International Law: Myth or Reality?" and the issue of the neutrality of international law was addressed from various angles. While it has often been said that international law should be neutral as regards the political, economic and social systems of states, this ideal of neutrality can be critiqued on both normative and empirical grounds. Among other questions, the forum considered whether it is still possible to speak of neutrality given the growing body of principles that are said to reflect the values of the international community and whether international legal instruments designed to influence the political, economic and social order of States are compatible with such neutrality.
The 13th Annual Conference of the European Society of International Law (ESIL) took place on 7-9 September 2017 in Naples. The conference was hosted by the University of Naples 'Federico II'. The theme of the conference was "Global Public Goods, Global Commons and Fundamental Values: The Responses of International Law" and the conference explored how international law has responded, or can or should respond, to the fundamental challenge of defining and regulating global public goods, global commons and fundamental values. Speakers examined how international law has responded to what qualifies as global public goods, global commons and fundamental values in a wide range of fields, and there was discussion of which general interests have or have not been deemed to deserve the protection of international law in one or more of these categories, and why; the legal foundation of such interests in international law was also explored.
