This research program investigates efficiency in the public sector, under four broad themes:
1. The efficiency-effectiveness trade-off
2. Harnessing the power of the workforce
3. Competition, choice and innovation
4. Ownership, accountability, incentives and motivation

Following the success of the previous post-holder in gaining a permanent academic position there is an opportunity for a post-doctoral researcher to contribute to the final year of the project. This position would be suitable for the holder of a recently-completed PhD already working on topics closely related to the themes of the programme. There would also be an opportunity to contribute to ongoing work on the NHS workforce and on Early and Higher Education, and to develop further projects in these areas, subject to successful funding applications. The successful candidate will have a background in applied microeconomics with considerable experience of data management and analysis using Stata.

The post-holder would be expected to play a role in the academic life of the School of Economics by attending research seminars and workshops. There may be opportunities to carry out teaching activities where there is a fit between the needs of the School and the interests of the successful applicant.

Research Fellows will be expected to work with the PI and others in the School to contribute to high quality (3-4* REF) outputs as well as contribute to the interim and final reports, and project meetings. The project budget includes funds to cover research expenses and to attend local and international conferences and seminars to disseminate research findings.
