The financialization of commodity markets has attracted considerable research and interest in policy circles. Besides fundamentals, such as weather shocks, declining inventory or consumption growth, financial investment and speculative activities are put forward as factors driving prices and volatility in these markets. Our workshop tries to shed light on the causes and consequences of the commodity price dynamics concentrating on the characteristics and trading behavior of financial investors as well as their impact on market outcomes.

TOPICS: Topics to be considered for the workshop include but are not limited to:
- Financialization in commodity markets and commodity price movements
- Trading strategies and price effects of financial speculation
- Characteristics and effects of index funds on futures price dynamics
- Importance and impact of informed hedging and risk sharing
- Characteristics of hedging and speculation in thinly traded markets
- Ghost trades and market manipulation in thinly traded markets
- Regulatory implications of financialization

We especially welcome empirical papers, but we will also consider theoretical work. One session will be devoted to presentations by PhD students. Academics and policy makers are encouraged to submit papers.
