Abstract

The paper extends the view in literature of design thinking from a contextual historic point of view and integrates additional essential scientific contributions to the field. As design thinking is founded within the Weltan-schauung of pragmatism, a brief history of pragmatism is laid-out. Then the central issues in design thinking will be discussed and its dimensions will be expanded. Finally, the paper suggests that a synergy between the phenomenology and design thinking is necessary to contribute to the field for research and practice. The novelty of the paper is that the extended view of pragmatism based on phenomenology has rarely been applied to design thinking and therefore would open new pathways for designers to make an impact.
