National Academy of Social Insurance (NASI)
Summer 2013: Paid Internships in Washington, DC

The National Academy of Social Insurance (NASI) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization made up of the nation's leading experts on social insurance. Its mission is to advance solutions to challenges facing the nation by increasing public understanding of how social insurance contributes to economic security.

Social insurance encompasses broad-based systems for insuring workers and their families against economic insecurity caused by loss of income from work and the cost of health care. NASI's programmatic scope covers U.S. social insurance programs ­ primarily Social Security, workers' compensation, unemployment insurance, private employee benefits, Medicare, other health coverage programs, long-term services and supports, and related public assistance.

PROGRAM DETAILS: NASI's internship programs - The Washington Internship on Social Insurance, The Somers Aging and Long-Term Care Internship, The Nathan J. Stark Internship for Non-Profit Development, and The Eileen Sweeney Graduate Internship in Disability Policy - provide talented students with a substantive learning experience by equipping them with the skills necessary to become contributors and future leaders in the field of social insurance.

QUALIFICATIONS: NASI seeks outstanding graduate and upper division undergraduate students to serve as interns on social insurance policy research and analysis projects in Washington, DC. Students studying economics, law, political science, public policy, health policy, social work, gerontology, communications/journalism, actuarial science, or related subjects are urged to apply.

PLACEMENT: Each student is matched (based on her/his qualifications and interests) with a placement in the DC metropolitan area. Placements are organizations, firms, or government agencies where NASI members work, and where the member is available to supervise the student on a social insurance or related project. Interns have the opportunity to:
- Work with leading experts and officials who are recognized authorities on social insurance policy, Social Security, Medicare and other health coverage, financing, unemployment insurance, disability, long-term services and supports, and related public and private programs;
- Gain valuable skills and knowledge, plus work experience with top policy organizations in Washington, DC;
- Make professional contacts and network within their areas of interest;
- Participate in a weekly seminar series led by NASI members; and
- Discuss current policy issues and attend Congressional hearings and relevant DC policy forums.

INTERNSHIP DETAILS:
- Time commitment: Full-time for 12 weeks beginning in May/June to Aug/Sept 2013 (Exact start dates are flexible)
- Application deadline: March 1, 2013 (All application materials must be received by this date to be considered)
- Location: Washington, DC
- Honorarium: $3,500 stipend to offset living expenses (Students can also receive academic credit)
