Applications are now being accepted for the
Political History (POLHIST) track within the
2013/14 PhD program at IMT Institute for Advanced
Studies Lucca (http://www.imtlucca.it). The
track aims at providing students with the most
advanced and up-to-date theoretical and
methodological instruments for the historical
study of nineteenth and twentieth century
politics, policies, political institutions and
political ideas. The program aims in particular
at bridging two divides: that between the
theoretical approach of social scientists
(political scientists and theorists, economists
and anthropologists) and the idiographic approach
of historians, and that between national and
non-national (international, cross-national,
transnational, global) political histories.
COURSE DETAILS: All courses are held in English
and led by world-renowned researches. Core and
advanced courses are devoted to methodologies,
theoretical instruments and general
interpretative frameworks. Coursework is further
enriched by research seminars, offered to
transmit highly-specific and avant-garde concepts
and, at the same time, be accessible to a wide
student audience. By means of these courses and
seminars the track will seek to present a wide
array of research experiences - either in
progress, recently completed, or “classical”, and
aims at providing students with the opportunity
to confront and understand as many methodologies
as possible, meanwhile keeping abreast of the
latest international advancements in historical studies
Students will also have the possibility of
performing advanced research in the Institutional
Change, Economics, Society (ICES) and Political
History (POLHIST) research units.
PhD students, besides receiving the standard
research scholarship of Euro 13,600/year (amount
established by Italian law), are offered
on-campus housing on a brand-new and fully
integrated campus in the historical center of the
beautiful Tuscan city of Lucca, and daily access
to the canteen. Students also get the opportunity
to spend research periods abroad during the program.
Please note that 5 additional PhD scholarships
have been made available by two institutes of the
Italian National Research Council (CNR), namely
the Institute of Informatics and Telematics
(http://www.iit.cnr.it/en) and the Institute of
Information Science and Technologies (http://www.isti.cnr.it/).
