Florida State University (FSU) seeks a new Dean of the College of Law who will partner with the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and the College's faculty to lead the institution in its continued pursuit of academic excellence. The skills sought are visionary and collaborative leadership coupled with strong administrative and interpersonal skills. The College of Law works closely with FSU's other colleges and the University's senior administration to advance the University's academic mission and Florida State's goal of being a "Top 25" ranked public university.
ABOUT THE COLLEGE OF LAW: The College of Law's academic programs and faculty are among the best in the nation. The law faculty delivers a sophisticated program of study that prepares students to enter the worlds of law, business and government at the highest level. U.S. News & World Report (2015) ranks the College of Law as the 50th best law school in the nation. Florida State's environmental program is ranked as the nation's 17th best. In 2014, readers of the influential Brian Leiter's Law School Reports blog voted the faculty the nation's 35th best. The College of Law has been active in meeting the needs of the changing legal market and in affording students access to a wide array of classroom and outside-the-classroom education. Students also obtain hands-on legal experience in the College's three "live client" clinics, the newest of which is the Business Law Clinic. The College offers J.D. certificate programs in International Law, Environmental Law, and Business Law. It has an accelerated J.D. program ("3+3") for students at several universities. JOB DESCRIPTION: The new Dean will serve as the chief academic officer and chief administrator of the College of Law and will report to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. He/she will provide open leadership that is effective in preserving and enhancing the College of Law's commitment to high-quality scholarship, student-centered legal education, and support for the legal system. The Dean will be responsible for strategic, operational, and financial matters, while being inclusive and supportive of broad diversity. The Dean will be responsible for anchoring the College of Law's relationships with alumni, the legal profession, the academy, and the larger public. Fundraising will be an ongoing priority for the Dean. This will involve establishing forward-looking development initiatives while promoting the achievements of the College's faculty and students. The Dean will pursue a bold vision for the future with a goal of enhancing the reputation of the College of Law.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will possess academic and professional credentials sufficient to engender respect from the academy, the state university system, and the community at large. Ideally, the Dean will display both a successful record as a faculty member and evidence of leadership experience in higher education. The new Dean must be adept at supervision and at working with faculty, staff, a diverse student body, community partners, alumni, and donors. In addition, the successful candidate will possess:
- Juris Doctorate or equivalent from an accredited institution
- Academic and professional experience that will enhance the reputation of the College of Law and enjoy the support of the University, faculty, students, alumni, and the judicial system
- Academic and professional experience commensurate with appointment at the rank of tenured full professor
- Outstanding academic and professional credentials
- Proven/demonstrated fundraising skills
- The capacity for administrative and intellectual leadership
- A track record of consensus building
- Excellent communication skills
- A deep appreciation for the legal profession and for legal scholarship
- Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to articulate and advocate for the needs of the College
- Administrative experience that includes academic planning, program review, strategic planning, program development, budgeting, fiscal/personnel management, and problem solving in similar organizations
- The ability to promote professional development activities related to academic leadership, classroom instruction, instructional technology, and support staff development
- The breadth and depth required to oversee the program and to help ensure that relevant accreditation standards are maintained
