JOB DESCRIPTION: At Tilburg Law School we have an opening for a post-doctorate researcher who will strengthen the research group working on sustainable development and climate change. The European Commission has identified climate action and various aspects of sustainable development as major societal challenges common to all European countries, and an area which presents considerable potential for Europe to lead the world in providing innovative responses to this challenge.

TLS expertise and research can contribute in various ways and from various perspectives to the challenge of climate action and sustainable development, for instance by:
- researching the effectiveness of the current climate change mitigation instrument mix, its links to development issues, and the challenges of expanding the EU ETS to a global level,
- researching legal issues of climate change adaptation, particularly in the field of agriculture, for instance by determining the conditions for successful climate smart agriculture in the EU and in developing countries,
- research aimed at finding the right regulatory framework in the EU for eco-innovation, i.e., radical technological shifts to foster a low carbon economy.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS: In this position you will report directly to the vice-dean Research. The position is functionally integrated in the task force working on climate action and sustainable development. This group brings together the researchers from within the Law School and the Tilburg Sustainability Center, working on this topic. In particular, the researcher will carry out the legal aspects of the research agenda, with a strong focus on EU law. Working on this research agenda, the researcher will be allocated the time and opportunity to draft an individual grant proposal within a period of two years.

The researcher will take an active role in TLS and TSC activities, contributing to its fundamental research, as well as attending and presenting in its seminar series and other activities. He or she will also assist in organizing conferences and workshops. He or she will develop research projects and contribute and coordinate funding requests at EU level, within the Horizon2020 framework program aimed at climate action and sustainable development. He or she will contribute to the visibility and reputation of TLS and TSC in the Netherlands, at the European level and internationally.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS: In the light of the above, we are seeking candidates who have completed their Ph.D. in EU environmental law, with a strong interest in climate law. Candidates are expected to combine good research skills with excellent networking skills, an entrepreneurial mindset and the ability to help build a consortium.

Candidates are expected to have demonstrable experience with both individual and team-work research, preferably in a European environment, and to have an excellent command of English, both written and spoken.

Within the first two years of appointment candidates are expected to apply for an individual grant, such as a NWO-Veni grant or ERC starting grant.

EMPLOYMENT TERMS AND CONDITIONS: Tilburg University offers a good benefits package in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. The post-doctorate researcher will be appointed at one of the departments of Tilburg Law School. We offer competitive European salaries. The appointment will be made at the rank of Researcher 3. The salary for the position of Researcher has a maximum of Euro 4418,- gross per month and is based on the scale 11 of the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities. The appointment will be for a period of three years, with a possibility of renewal. Tilburg University is rated among the top of Dutch employers, offering very good fringe benefits, such as the possibility to determine your benefits individually through a labour choice model and reimbursement of moving expenses. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a tax-free allowance equal to 30% of their taxable salary. The university will apply for such an allowance on their behalf whenever the criteria are met.
