MCGILL UNIVERSITY
Faculty of Law
Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism
Executive Director
The Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism, based at
the Faculty of Law of McGill University, invites
applications for the position of Executive Director.
Appointment will be for a one-year term starting August
1st, 2008, during the leave of the current holder of the
position.
ABOUT THE CENTRE:
The Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism was created
in 2005 to become a focal point for innovative legal and
interdisciplinary research, dialogue and outreach on human
rights and legal pluralism. The Centre provides students,
professors and the larger community with a locus of
intellectual and physical resources for engaging critically
with how law impacts upon some of the most compelling
social problems of our modern era. The primary objectives
and mission of the Centre include (i) to advance innovative
research on human rights and the role of law in a legally
plural world; (ii) to enrich the nexus of scholarship and
teaching by engaging undergraduate and graduate students in
human rights research projects, human rights internships
and advanced scholarship; and (iii) to communicate research
results and provide a forum for the exchange of ideas
through scholarly publications, public conferences,
seminars, and workshops.
JOB DESCRIPTION/QUALIFICATIONS:
The Executive Director will assume the overall
responsibility for the management of the Centre in
collaboration with the Centre's Director and Director of
Research. This will include contributing to strategic
planning for budgeting, development and communications,
liaising with members of the Centre, students, civil
society, and government agencies, participating in the
development of research strategies and grant applications,
directing the international human rights internships
programme, coordinating conferences and workshops,
exploring non-research funding opportunities. Given this
mandate and the nature of the Faculty of Law, it is
expected that the Executive Director will have a law degree
or equivalent, experience in the field of human rights, and
be able to function in English and French.
ABOUT THE FACULTY OF LAW:
The Faculty of Law maintains a research environment marked
by a strong sense of collegiality through which ongoing
intellectual and professional development of all professors
is encouraged. This is sustained through its Institutes of
Comparative Law and Air and Space Law, its other Research
Centres, including those in Private and Comparative Law and
Intellectual Property Policy, and its joint programmes in
Environmental Studies and European Studies. Several
professors are cross-appointed to other Faculties at McGill
University and transdisciplinary team research is common.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
McGill University is committed to equity in employment. The
Faculty encourages applications from all qualified
candidates, especially women, aboriginal peoples, visible
minorities and persons with disabilities. The Faculty
follows Canadian immigration regulations promoting the
recruitment of Canadian citizens and landed immigrants,
although the current professorial cohort comprises
professors from numerous countries.
Applications, including a detailed cover letter, a
curriculum vitae, and the names and addresses of three
