ABOUT TICOM:
In the course of 2008, the Faculty will establish the new
Tilburg Institute of Comparative and Transnational Law
(Ticom). Ticom is a research institute devoted to studying
law from an international perspective. Its main focus is
how law can be perceived beyond the nation-state and adopts
an approach in which various areas of law are explored in
an integrative way. Ticom is aiming to become a leading
centre for an innovative approach towards comparative and
transnational law. It offers a stimulating academic
environment by:
- attracting talented PhD researchers and post-docs
- inviting (foreign) researchers to visit the Tilburg
campus and give seminars
- organising invited conferences
- stimulating interdisciplinary work

The new institute has vacancies for a Post-doc (F/M, 1,0

motivated post-doc with a strong interest in comparative
law and/or questions of legal harmonisation. The post-doc
helps to build up Ticom in terms of organisation and will
also be expected to engage in high-level research in the
core of Ticom's research programme. The successful
candidate will work closely together with the director of
Ticom (Prof. Jan Smits) and with other key researchers in
the Institute.

The candidate must have a PhD in law (or expects to obtain
one within six months), be highly motivated and committed to

publications. He or she must have a profound interest in
comparative law and/or questions of legal harmonisation and
globalisation. The candidate should also have strong
organisational skills and have the ability to obtain
research funding. The ability to communicate and work in
English is essential, given the international environment
the new Institute seeks to create. Any experience in
interdisciplinary settings and in dealing with various areas
of the law will be considered a strong point.

Tilburg University is among the top of Dutch employers and
has an excellent policy concerning terms of employment. The

ranges between Euro 2330,- and Euro 4284,- gross per month

PHD RESEARCHER EUROPEAN PRIVATE LAW:
vacancies are also available for a PhD Researcher European
Private Law (F/M, 1,0 fte) Vacancy number 650.11.08.
Over the last decades, law has become increasingly
independent of national states: under the influence of
Europeanisation and globalisation, law is no longer
necessarily tied to national legislatures and courts. At
the new Tilburg Institute of Comparative and Transnational
Law (Ticom), we expect this development to raise enormous
challenges for future research. Our approach is to practice
legal science in an international way, also in the
classical areas of law. This approach offers excellent
opportunities for adventurous students wishing to write a
PhD thesis in law.
This PhD project will be in the field of European private
law. The exact topic is to be decided upon in cooperation
with the supervisor and is dependent on the interests of
the candidate. Ticom invites excellent candidates to submit
a motivation letter, a CV and a short (one page)
description of your ideas on the topic you want to write
about.
The research project should lead to a PhD-thesis within
four years, as well as to publications in international
journals.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate must be a highly motivated person
with excellent grades and with a university degree in law.
He or she has strong analytical and writing skills. The
candidate should be fluent in English, both orally and in
writing, and also be willing to write the PhD thesis in
English. He or she is also willing to participate actively
in Ticom's academic community.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Tilburg University is among the top of Dutch employers and
has an excellent policy concerning terms of employment. The
selected candidate will get a contract (full-time) as a PhD
researcher for one year. After one year, an evaluation is
held. When the evaluation is positive, the contract will be
extended with three years. The full-time PhD position has a
gross monthly salary of Euro 2000,- in the first year,
increasing to Euro 2558,- in the fourth year. The target
starting date will be as soon as possible.
