3RD ANNUAL CONFERENCE ON MARKET STRUCTURE
AND MARKET INTEGRITY
November 10th, 2008
Le Royal Meridien King Edward Hotel,
Toronto, Ontario Canada
BEST PAPER PRIZE: $10,000.00
Regulators in Canada, the U.S. and Europe are addressing
critical market structure and market integrity issues at a
time when markets, and the entities that have traditionally
regulated them, are experiencing significant change.
Exchanges are merging, new trading markets are being
launched in Canada and around the world, and the self-
regulatory landscape is evolving with the creation of FINRA
and the proposed merger of the Investment Dealers
Association and Market Regulation Services.
The DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University and
Market Regulation Services Inc. are sponsoring a one-day
conference in Toronto, Canada on November 10, 2008 to
explore these and other current issues relating to market
structure and market integrity.
The conference will bring together leading international
academic researchers, regulators, industry professionals
and students to explore with their peers current issues,
trends, challenges and opportunities in market structure
and market integrity issues.
TOPICS:
The organizers invite submissions addressing any of the
following, or related, topics:
- The future of SRO regulation - how will the continuing
evolution of exchange ownership structures and
consolidation among markets affect the traditional models
of market integrity regulation?
- The regulation of short sales - what has been the impact
of the elimination of the tick test in the U.S.? Will
current regulatory initiatives address issues like double
voting?
- Investment research - what impact with the unbundling of
research and execution services have? How is research
being valued in the marketplace? How has the analyst
settlement changed the landscape?
- Best execution - will there be a harmonized and workable
definition in Canada, the U.S. and the UK?
- Trade-throughs - is there an empirical case for trade-
through rules? What has been the impact of their
implementation under Reg NMS? What direction will
Canadian regulators take?
- Access fees and market data - what can other
jurisdictions learn from the U.S. debate? Do Canadian
regulators need to address access fees and market data
arrangements?
- Debt and derivatives markets - how are market structure
and market integrity debates playing out in debt markets?
What explains existing levels of liquidity in Canada?
In addition to these themes, papers addressing other areas
of market structure and market integrity research are
welcomed. Papers may be conceptual, theoretical,
empirical, experimental or case studies, and will be
reviewed on a blind basis by members of the program
committee.
Authors of accepted papers will be responsible for paying
their own travel and accommodation expenses.
