CALL FOR PAPERS

             "EMPIRICAL STUDIES OF CIVIL LIABILITY"

                    October 9th & 10th, 2008


     The Searle Center on Law, Regulation, and Economic Growth
     is issuing a call for original research papers to be
     presented at a Research Symposium on Empirical Studies of
     Civil Liability at Northwestern University School of Law.
     The Symposium will run from 9:00 AM on Thursday, October
     9th to 12:30 PM on Friday, October 10th.


     TOPICS:

     The goal of this Research Symposium is to present and
     discuss high-quality empirical studies of civil liability.
     The topics covered and the exact format of the symposium
     will be determined in part by the submissions. Potential
     topics include, but are not limited to: Arbitration of
     Civil Disputes, Civil Justice Reforms, Mass Torts, Class
     Actions, Tort Reform, Medical Malpractice, and, in general,
     empirical studies of the impact of changes in substantive
     and procedural rules and regulations.


     FURTHER INFORMATION:

     The Symposium will feature a Keynote Dinner Address by W.
     Kip Viscusi, University Professor of Law, Economics, and
     Management, Vanderbilt University. There will be a
     reception, dinner and program on Thursday evening.

     Authors will receive an honorarium of $1,000 to cover
     reasonable transportation expenses. The Searle Center will
     make hotel reservations and pay for rooms on Wednesday and
     Thursday.

     The Symposium format will include Discussants of the
     various papers. The typical Discussant will be asked to
     comment on two papers as part of a panel discussion.
     Discussants will receive an honorarium of $500 to cover
     reasonable transportation expenses. The Searle Center will
     make hotel reservations and pay for rooms on Wednesday and
     Thursday.

     Papers prepared for the Research Symposium on "Empirical
     Studies of Civil Liability" will be permanently hosted on
     the Searle Center website:

     Authors will be free to publish their work in other venues
     (with appropriate acknowledgement of the Searle Center).


     RESEARCH PROPOSALS - SUBMISSION, REVIEW PROCEDURE AND TIMELINE:

     Proposal Submission Deadline: Research Proposals should
     include an abstract (300 words maximum) and c.v. Proposals
     should be submitted to:

     by January 15, 2008.

     Notification Deadline: Research Proposals will be reviewed
     by a three-member committee. Authors will be notified of
     the committeeâs decisions by February 15, 2008.

     Discussion Draft Deadline: Papers suitable for
     distribution to discussants and other conference
     participants must be received by September 1, 2008.

     Revision Deadline:  November 10, 2008. Upon revision in
     response to comments received at the symposium, papers will
     be permanently hosted on the Searle Center website.

     Honoraria will be paid in two installments: 50 percent
     upon presentation at the symposium; 50 percent upon
     submission of a revised paper that the author is willing
     to put on the Searle Center website.

     entire Symposium.
