On September 12-13, 2013, The Center for the Protection of Intellectual Property (CPIP) at George Mason University School of Law will host its inaugural conference on patent law, "The Commercial Function of Patents in Today's Innovation Economy." The conference panels will address the function of the commercial system in the creation and distribution of patented innovation.

OVERVIEW: Recent discussions about patents have focused almost entirely on litigation, but what goes on every day in the innovation industries is the creation and development of new business models and private ordering mechanisms that bring innovation into the hands of people across the world. Litigation is just the tip of the iceberg, and beneath it lies an immense amount of activity dedicated to commercializing, and thus making real for everyone, new innovation in wide-ranging industries. Millions of IP transactions occur daily. IP facilitates win-win deals. IP makes a wide range of financial deals possible.

This is the conference dedicated to the issue that's been too long neglected: transactions, commercialization, and the value-creation made possible by intellectual property.
