Total Law Summer Course on Advanced EU Legal Practice

July 2-14, 2012, Central European University, Budapest

Central European University (CEU), in cooperation with the Total Law Team, announces its Summer course in "Advanced European Union Legal Practice". For the eighth consecutive year, the program brings together around 50 participants from all over the world and from diverse legal and policy backgrounds.

DESCRIPTION: This advanced course is about the practice of European Union Law. The program combines seminars on selected topics, supporting workshops, and individual/group assignments. Through participation in the course activities and interaction with experienced practitioners and well-known academics sharing their extensive knowledge of EU law and its practical operation, participants will improve their understanding of selected EU legal issues and their economic, social and political contexts. The working language of the course is English.

QUALIFICATIONS: The course is addressed at professionals and academics seeking further credentials in European Union law. It also admits advanced students (students in the final year of their undergraduate studies or post-graduate students), who are seeking to embark on professional or academic careers where an understanding of EU law and policy and their interactions is considered essential. The course is thus particularly relevant to civil servants from EU Member States, candidate and neighboring countries, employees of international organizations (including EU institutions), NGOs, interest groups and lobbyists involved in policy-making in fields affected by EU laws and policies, as well as to those considering such positions.

This year the course aims to broaden its disciplinary and professional profile by including not only participants from legal academia or practice, but also from other related fields of expertise (i.e. EU affairs, European studies, public policy, administration, civil service, governance, diplomacy, international relations, political science, sociology, etc).

TEACHING TEAM: The Total Law team is led by Joseph Weiler (Joseph Straus Professor of Law and Jean Monnet Chair at New York University School of Law) and includes: Jose M. de Areilza (Professor of European Union Law and Dean of IE Law School, Madrid), Kieran St C. Bradley (Head of the Legislation Unit of the European Parliament's Legal Service, Brussels), Damian Chalmers (Professor and Jean Monnet Chair in EU law at the London School of Economics and Political Science), Miguel Poiares Maduro (Professor and Director of the Global Governance Programme at the European University Institute, Florence), Imola Streho (Associate Professor at Sciences Po, Paris) and Karine Caunes (Jean Monnet Research Fellow within the Center for International and Regional Economic Law & Justice at New York University School of Law).

COURSE FEE: The tuition fee is 790 EUR for the two-week course ("Early Bird" fee: 730 EUR). It includes participation in the summer course, some administrative costs, an orientation program and welcome pack, access to the CEU Library and IT facilities, reading materials, printing quota, and some social activities. Participants are also expected to cover their travel and accommodation expenses. Scholarships or tuition waivers are not available.
