CALL FOR NOMINATIONS AND APPLICATIONS

SEARLE-KAUFFMAN INSTITUTE ON LAW, INNOVATION, AND GROWTH

The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation has launched an
ambitious project on Law, Innovation, and Growth to foster
research on the dynamic efficiency of laws and regulations
that can spur economic growth. See:

http://www.kauffman.org/research-and-policy/law-innovationgrowth-initiative.aspx

As part of this effort, Northwestern Law's Searle Center on
Law, Regulation, and Economic Growth will hold the Searle-
Kauffman Institute on Law, Innovation, and Growth over the
course of three meetings in academic year 2009-2010. The
purpose of the Searle-Kauffman Institute is to identify and
then help to develop scholars who are interested in
building a research agenda on issues related to the
     institutions of economic growth.

     PARTICIPANTS:

Attendees at the Searle-Kauffman Institute will include
three broad categories of academics: (1) leaders in the
development of Law and Economics who will serve as
discussion leaders; (2) leading scholars on economic growth
who will present current research; and (3) Searle-Kauffman
Fellows on Law, Innovation, and Growth-scholars in law,
economics, or business who are interested in focusing their
research on law and economic growth. The Searle Center will
select 16 Searle-Kauffman Fellows to participate in the
     2009-2010 Searle-Kauffman Institute.

     MEETING DETAILS:

The 2009-2010 Searle-Kauffman Institute will be spread over
     three meetings:

     - Wednesday, September 30 (4 PM) to Friday, October 2
(lunch) (Northwestern Law Searle Center, Chicago,
       Illinois)
     - Sunday, January 24 (4 PM) to Tuesday, January 26 (noon)
       (Captiva, Florida)
     - Sunday, March 14 (4 PM) to Tuesday, March 16 (noon)
(Chapman University School of Law, Orange, California)

The Searle-Kauffman Institute will have minimal formal
presentations - instead, the sessions will attempt to spur
creativity through active participation of all attendees.
Each meeting will consist of five or six discussion
sessions, each based on an article selected by the
discussion leader. The purpose of the sessions will be to
discuss how insights from that article can be extended to
research on law and economic growth. The three meetings
will be cumulative. The first meeting will focus on core
principles of Law and Economics. The second meeting will
involve presentations of current research on growth by
Kauffman supported scholars. The Searle-Kauffman Fellows
will present their research proposals or working papers at
     the third meeting.

Searle-Kauffman Fellows in Law, Innovation, and Growth will
receive three honoraria totaling $3,500: $500 after
attending the first meeting in September-October; $500
after attending the second meeting in January; and $2,500
after attending the third meeting in March. Fellows must
attend all three meetings, and will be responsible for
their own transportation expenses and arrangements. The
Searle Center will make hotel reservations and pay for the
rooms. All meals at the Institute are group meals.

     APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
