POSITION DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES:
The CUNY Institute for Demographic Research (CIDR) was
created as part of the CUNY cluster initiative in
demography to serve as a focal point for demographic
research and training for the City University of New York
across seven affiliate campuses to date, with approximately
30 current, and 10 anticipated new faculty members by 2010.
The Institute engages in research in fertility, mortality,
family dynamics, migration, urbanization, race and
ethnicity, aging and economic and spatial demography,
including both, domestic or international perspectives. A
primary goal of CUNY's demography cluster initiative is to
develop the Institute into a population center of national
reputation. Reporting to the Director of the CIDR, the
Computing Director for Demographic Research will implement
and oversee the effective use of technologies in
demographic research, teaching and learning for the
Institute's multiple faculty and students across the
campuses. The Computing Director assesses the Institute's
current and future computing needs, determines the
feasibility of those needs, and designs and implements the
technology infrastructure, which includes a large storage
server, data archives, and applications server housed at
Baruch and is accessible and compatible across all
affiliate campuses.
The duties and responsibilities of the position will
include, but are not limited to the following:
- Oversees the Institute's high capacity and performance
computer infrastructure that includes the software, data
and programming requirements to store and analyze
demographic data across the campuses;
- Researches and implements technology tools to meet the
needs and mission of the Institute, and works with
faculty members at Baruch and the affiliate campuses to
develop and integrate technology resources in teaching
and research;
- Develops databases and networked resources in support of
demographic research computing and reporting across the
affiliate campuses;
- Collaborates with or supports the faculty and students to
develop, implement and manage the statistical programs
and relational database that are essential to demographic
research;
- Develops and manages the technology budget and prepares
the information technology sections in grant proposals;
- Oversees the design and implementation of the CIDR
website;
- Works with Baruch's Chief Technology Officer/Chief
Librarian, Library and BCTC staff members, and networks
with CUNY and the other schools' information technology
and academic technology service providers to advocate
needs, obtain resources and identity collaborative
opportunities;
- Leads the implementation of specific educational
technology projects and stays abreast of technological
advances and funding opportunities for research or
curricular innovations as applied to demographic studies;
- Oversees desktop support and system administration for
the Institute and ensures the CIDR's systems are
compatible with the College, CUNY and other IT systems;
- Trains and supervises technical and part-time staff
members; and
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
A Bachelor's Degree and eight (8) years of relevant
experience are required. A Master's Degree in Instructional
Technology, Educational Technology, technology management,
or a related field is strongly preferred and may be
substituted for up to two years of experience. Experience
with academic technology systems and applications in an
institution of higher education are strongly preferred.
Advanced knowledge of or experience with networking,
security, systems design and operations, Windows and UNIX
environments, and programming in statistical packages and
relational databases are required. Knowledge of various
instructional technologies and their hardware and software
requirements are required. Strong organizational skills
with the ability to establish priorities, manage multiple
demands and projects, and meet deadlines are required.
Advanced knowledge of management and programming of survey,
census or other social science data is strongly preferred.
A strong customer service orientation and attention to
details are essential, along with excellent verbal, written
and interpersonal communication skills. Must have the
ability to train and communicate effectively with audiences
of various levels of computer proficiency. Must have
knowledge of various software programs and have the ability
to integrate the technology into academic content areas.
Must be an enthusiastic self-starter with the ability to
take initiative, use sound judgment to make decisions,
resolve problems, and work effectively with all levels of
staff and constituents.
