Associate Director, Policy Development

The National Office is seeking an individual for the Associate Director of Policy Development. This role is responsible for: (1) supporting policy development efforts on federal, state, and public health issues related to Alzheimer's disease; (2) managing policy development projects, as directed by the Senior Director of Public Policy; and (3) undertaking data and policy research and analysis. We seek an individual with direct experience working on health care policy development, including policy research, for a similar organization, think tank, or consulting firm. The Associate Director will work for the Association's Public Policy division based in Washington, DC and will report to the division's Senior Director of Public Policy, also based in the Washington office.
The successful candidate must be a strong team player and enjoy working in a collegial yet highly demanding and effective culture. Demonstrated ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, execute strategy, and operate with confidentiality will also be required as are excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills. We seek an individual with an appreciation for the complexities of working within a large voluntary health organization. In addition, the preferred candidate will have a strong mission orientation and a passion for advocacy on behalf of the Alzheimer's Association and the people it represents.
JOB DESCRIPTION: The Associate Director of Policy Development has the following responsibilities:
- Managing policy development projects, as determined by the Senior Director of Public Policy.
- Assisting in the development of the Association's policy positions and their adjustment over time by:
Working with the Senior Director of Public Policy and the Vice President of Public Policy in determining the priority policy development needs of the Association;
Evaluating all sources of data and monitoring relevant policy literature;
- Evaluating the expected impact of proposed and existing policies on Association constituents;
Engaging and networking with other policy experts and organizations; and
Identifying emerging issues.
- Serving as the liaison between the Policy Development Department and other Departments and Divisions in the Association, including by:
Working with the heads of Federal Affairs, State Affairs, and Public Health in identifying, creating, and modifying policy positions; and
Working with individuals in other Divisions, including Med/Sci and Constituent Relations (especially the Constituent Services and Healthcare Professionals Departments), to:
- Understand the issues faced by individuals with Alzheimer's and their families that may need to be addressed through policy solutions; and
- Ensure Association-wide input and participation in the development of the Association's policy positions.
- Undertaking data and statistical research regarding individuals with Alzheimer's disease and their caregivers as well as relevant health care issues.
- Contributing to the Association's understanding and communication of the impact of Alzheimer's on various populations as well as the Association's policy positions to address that impact by:
Preparing materials on the policy positions of the Association, including policy briefs, facts sheets, white papers, and special reports;
Developing in-person and web-based presentations; and
Developing and coordinating in-person and web-based education and training on policy issues.
- Managing logistics associated with convening briefings, teleconferences, and other policy development activities.
- Bachelor's degree required preferably in public policy, political science, health policy or aging or a combination of education and experience.
- Six years of experience, with at least some experience in policy development or policy analysis.
- Excellent written and oral communications skills.
- Strong research and analytical skills.
