      ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

The Department of Finance has over 1250 full-time
equivalent students. The Department has a prestigious
undergraduate and honours program and an equally
prestigious and well-recognized suite of postgraduate
programs, ranging from the practitioner-oriented Master of
Applied Finance to the specialised Master of Commerce in
Finance and the PhD in Finance. The Department is actively
involved in executive education and has strong professional
links with practitioners and financial institutions.

Current research interests of our academic faculty span the
field of finance and include asset pricing, corporate
      finance, market microstructure, financial institutions,
real estate finance, international finance, and a
particular focus on derivatives research. The Department
hosts the Melbourne Derivatives Research Group, a research
network focused on derivatives-related research (including
pricing, risk management, and regulation). The Department
is a founding member of the Melbourne Centre for Financial
Studies, a cooperative research venture of three Melbourne
universities and the Financial Services Institute of
Australasia, which acts as a 'research clearing house,'
bridging the gap between the finance industry and finance
academia. To support its many research activities, the
Department subscribes to a large number of financial
databases, including WRDS, SDC, Datastream, Bloomberg and
IRESS. Twenty-six full-time academic staff are currently
employed in the Department and there is an ongoing program
of prominent international academics visiting the
      Department.

High quality research publications are a primary
Departmental goal. Funding for both international
conference travel and to facilitate work with overseas co-
authors is comparable to that at leading research intensive
universities. Teaching loads are competitive with those at
leading research intensive universities and a reduced
teaching load is provided to new hires in their first year
      to further encourage research.
