Dublin City University Business School
Post-Doctoral Researcher (11-month contract)
DCU Business School is a vibrant research community providing research support to Faculty and Students that is unrivalled in Ireland. The School contains five academic groups: Management and Management Information Systems; Economics, Finance and Entrepreneurship; Marketing; Accounting; and Human Resource Management and Organisational Behaviour.
There is currently a vacancy for a Post-Doctoral Researcher in the Economics, Finance and Entrepreneurship group. For information on the research in the Economics, Finance and Entrepreneurship group, see: http://www4.dcu.ie/dcubs/research_interests_economics_finance_entrepreneurship.shtml
JOB DESCRIPTION: The holder of the Post-Doctoral position will join existing Faculty in working on one of the following research projects:
- Empirical Finance: This research will concentrate on empirical estimation and modelling across three empirical finance projects: (i) High frequency analysis in financial markets; (ii) Financial market efficiency tests applied to gambling markets; (iii) Price clustering and psychological barriers in energy and commodities spread trading. The researcher will use parametric and nonparametric methods and models including analysis of nonlinear models such as regime switching and threshold models, diffusion models with jumps, realized volatility and covariance measurement. The researcher is expected to be familiar with econometric software packages (such as RATS, R, Stata, and Matlab) and also dealing with high frequency data. Programming skills are highly desirable.
- Access to finance for SMEs and existence of financial constraints: the objective of this project is to analyse the evidence on whether and to what extent SMEs in Ireland experience financial constraints, with an emphasis on bank financing; the aim is to provide (a) an independent empirical assessment of current funding conditions and (b) a theoretical lens to explain the impact of the business cycle on both the demand and supply of SME financing.
- The origins and evolution of large firms in Ireland: this project builds on research that studies the evolution of large firms from a strategy, structure, ownership and performance (SSOP) perspective. This will involve empirically examining the changing composition of large firms in Ireland.
As part of this role the successful candidate shall be required to participate in the DCU Research Career Framework. This framework is designed to provide significant professional development opportunities to Researchers and offer the best opportunities in terms of a wider career path.
It is also expected that the successful candidate will contribute to the teaching portfolio in the Economics, Finance and Entrepreneurship group. Reflecting the research focus of the post, however, the teaching load will be light. The post-holder will also be expected to support postgraduate scholars within the group and perform any other appropriate duties that may arise over time.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must possess a PhD in a relevant discipline, show strong commitment to research in their career to date with an emphasis on empirical work, including working with large datasets and/or in research endeavours with significant computing requirements. The successful candidate will primarily support research in relation to one of the above projects and, in collaboration with others in their discipline areas, publish articles out of this research in high impact journals. Subject to agreement with the Group head and the research teams involved in each project, the candidate may also elect to contribute to a combination of the above projects.
Strong written and oral communication skills are essential, and the candidates will need to be able to work effectively as part of a team to achieve the research goals of the relevant project.
Candidates for position of Postdoctoral Researcher will be assessed on the following competencies: - Discipline knowledge and Research skills Demonstrate the specific competencies required to significantly contribute to one of the research projects listed above
- Communicating Research Demonstrates the ability to communicate their research to their peers and the wider research community and ideally have a track record of publication-focused research (for example presenting at conferences and publishing research in relevant journals)
- Understanding the Research Environment Demonstrates an awareness of the research environment (for example funding bodies) and the ability to contribute to grant applications
