Aalto University - PhD in Finance

Aalto University School of Business - formerly the Helsinki School of Economics (HSE) - was established in 1911. Today, the School of Business is the leading business school in Finland and one of the top schools in Europe. The School is strongly dedicated to research and is located in Central Helsinki: Helsinki is the 2nd most livable city in the world according to a 2012 report by Monocle Magazine and the 8th in the Economist Intelligence Unit livability ranking 2012.

QUALIFICATIONS: The Doctoral Program at Aalto University School of Business is intended for candidates of excellent academic caliber motivated in pursuing a full-time doctoral program and in producing research of the highest international level. The School commits to providing funding for at least the first two years for accepted Doctoral Candidates who proceed successfully with their doctoral studies and research. Historically, all successful Finance PhD students have received funding throughout the Doctoral program.

ABOUT THE FINANCE DEPARTMENT: The Finance Department is strongly dedicated to research, as shown by a stream of research published in top Finance and Economics journals. The Department runs an excellent seminar series and is equipped with all major Finance databases. Many faculty members also have access to unique registry-based data sets from Finland. Close contact and interaction with the Aalto Finance Faculty ensures high quality PhD supervision in the several expertise areas of faculty members. Being a PhD student at Aalto gives an access to the very latest developments in international finance research via weekly meetings of the Helsinki Finance Seminar.

DESCRIPTION: The 4-year Doctoral Program comprises course work, research seminars and a PhD dissertation. One and a half years at the beginning of the doctoral studies are devoted mostly to intensive course work that is then followed by research for the PhD dissertation. The core Finance PhD courses are organized by The Graduate School of Finance (GSF), the national PhD program hosted by Aalto University. The local courses are complemented by intensive Finance PhD courses organized within the Nordic Finance Network (NFN), also hosted by Aalto University.

The ultimate test of any PhD program is its placement record. Here the track record of Aalto Finance PhDs is excellent. Our recent academic placements include positions at London Business School, Imperial College London, Catholic University of Lisbon, and Luxembourg School of Finance. The Aalto Finance PhD program provides a solid basis for starting an international academic career.

The deadline of applications is January 15, 2013.

Applications will be evaluated by academic departments based on previous academic performance, research potential, motivation, performance in standardized tests, and references. Candidates must be available for a potential interview. The Dean decides on admissions based on departmental assessments.
