CALL FOR PAPERS

                       MICROINSURANCE CONFERENCE

                                Senegal
                         3rd-5th November 2009

Special edition of the Journal of Risk and Insurance

The poor are particularly vulnerable to risk - especially
those in developing countries. While informal risk
management mechanisms (such as family risk sharing) exist
and are sometimes used to mitigate risks, these are, at
best, a limited response. Although insurance is rarely
available or affordable, an increasing number of
microinsurance programs have been established as either
pilot or as ongoing structures in recent years. Despite the
growing policy interest in microinsurance, little academic
attention has been focused on this marketplace.
Accordingly, the Journal of Risk and Insurance invites
papers for a special issue that will focus on
      microinsurance.

      TOPICS:

Empirical, theoretical and policy papers are invited on
      topics such as:

      - Design of microinsurance systems
      - Adverse selection and moral hazard
      - Effectiveness and sustainability
      - Distribution mechanisms
      - Crowding out, and crowding in, of alternative risk
        management mechanisms
      - Relationship to microfinance programs
      - Regulatory policy
      - Etc.

      FURTHER DETAILS:

The papers will be presented in a scientific track at this
year's 5th International Microinsurance Conference. The
conference is hosted by the Munich Re Foundation and the
Microinsurance Network, with the support of the Conference
Interafricaine des Marches d'Assurances (CIMA), the African
Insurance Organisation (AIO), the International Labour
Organization (ILO), and the Journal of Risk and Insurance.
A special edition of the Journal of Risk and Insurance will
be devoted to microinsurance and papers presented at the
conference may be considered for this edition. Limited
travel grants will be available for presenters. Additional
information on the conference is online at:
