Full-time Faculty Position
The Faculty of International Liberal Arts invites applications for two faculty positions in 1) Business and Economics; 2) Economics and Development, at the Associate or Assistant Professor level, beginning April 1, 2014.
ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY: AIU opened in 2004 as the first public 'university corporation' in Japan and, in recent years, it has been receiving growing attention for its unique education policy from leading companies, other higher education institutions and the mass media. The University is committed to the provision of a full international liberal arts curriculum and all the undergraduate teaching is conducted entirely in English (with the exception of the Japanese language program). All students are also required to spend a minimum of one year studying abroad at one of our 150+ overseas exchange partners. Currently there are about 800 Japan-based undergraduate students and 200 short-term international exchange students from all over the world enrolled in the university. There are also 60 Japanese and international students enrolled in the professional graduate school.
The University operates a two 15-week semester system, and there is an additional 7.5-week Winter program in January-February. Faculty are expected to teach 5-6 courses per year. For more information, please refer to http://web.aiu.ac.jp
JOB DESCRIPTION: The successful candidate will join our multi-disciplinary Global Business (GB) program, where it is hoped s/he will be in a position to offer courses in up to three of the following fields:
1) Position in Business and Economics
- World of Business and Economics (introductory level);
- Management of Knowledge, Information and Technology;
- Management Principles and Practices;
- International Business;
- Strategic Management;
- Social Media, Branding and Marketing.
2) Position in Economics and Development
- Environmental Economics and Development;
- Public Finance and Applications;
-International Finance;
- Game Theory and Applications;
- Development Economics and Emerging Economies;
- Industrial Organization.
The appointment will be made on an initial three-year, fixed-term contract basis, and is renewable upon mutual agreement. A renewed contract will lead to indefinite-term (i.e. de facto tenured) employment. Salary is competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Generous benefits are also included as part of the remuneration, including partial housing allowance, health insurance, and a research fund allowance.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teach undergraduate courses in 1) business and economics or 2) economics and development. Specific courses will depend on the expertise and experience of the candidate, and will be decided upon in consultation with the program director;
- Oversee student writing in Global Business courses and (capstone) seminars;
- Advise individual students as part of the school-wide advising system;
- Engage in scholarly research activity;
- Contribute to university and community service;
- Collaborate with faculty and staff on program development.
This position includes a coordination/oversight responsibility over student research and writing in the Global Business program. In this regard, the successful candidate is expected to:
- Conduct orientation sessions regarding academic writing (including social science methodology) to prepare students for advanced-level courses, especially the senior thesis (capstone) seminar;
- Oversee the quality of academic writing of global business majors, including the provision of office hours to advise students on their writing;
- Perform the above duties under the direction of her/his director and in collaboration with other Global Business faculty.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS: Requirements for the position:
- An earned doctorate or equivalent qualification in the social sciences, with demonstrated knowledge in 1) business and economics or 2) economics and development;
- Evidence of scholarly research activity at an institution of higher education;
- Excellent communication skills;
- Familiarity with statistical software such as OxMetrics, EViews, Stata, and SPSS;
- Familiarity with English written by non-native speakers.
Prior experience of living or working in a multi-cultural environment and knowledge of Japanese language and/or culture are desirable attributes.
