JOB DESCRIPTION/QUALIFICATIONS: The Brookings Global-CERES Economic and Social Policy in Latin America Initiative (ESPLA) in the The Global Economy and Development Program (Global) program at The Brookings Institution (Brookings), is accepting applications for a Fellow or Senior Fellow position. The successful candidate should hold a Ph.D. in economics and have at least 2 years of post-doctoral, research experience or relevant experience in the field of social policy research.

In coordination with the Vice President and Director of Global and ESPLA's Director, the Fellow or Senior Fellow will conduct original research and writing to advance the understanding of Latin America's social challenges driving policy in the region. In addition, the Fellow or Senior Fellow will help shape the debate on Latin America in Washington, D.C. and international circles. The Fellow or Senior Fellow will also cooperate closely with scholars throughout Brookings who work on Latin America issues.

While the candidate's specific research program will depend to some extent on the candidate's interests and background, the candidate should have a deep understanding of the economics of key social issues in Latin America and the Caribbean. Areas of research interest might include education, health, labor markets, social protection, and crime (as a social and economic problem).

The candidate must have a record of publication in professional or academic journals and a proven ability to conduct original policy research and analysis. The candidate must be able to conduct in-depth research, produce book-length monographs, and competently lead issue-focused meetings, conferences, and other events with little supervision. Strong candidates should have extensive contacts among the higher levels of the government, academic, media, and business communities in Latin America, and must be comfortable working with high-ranking decision makers, senior government and diplomatic officials, current and potential funders, and Brookings senior management. Moreover, the candidate must be willing to share management responsibilities with the ESPLA Director and be comfortable working in teams.

Outstanding written and oral communication skills and fluency in both English and Spanish are required; proficiency in Portuguese is desirable.
