Senior Manager, Communications & Policy Engagement
Development Manager
The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC)
is an international non-profit, non-governmental
organization that carries out policy relevant research on
population, health, education and development issues facing
sub-Saharan Africa. The Center seeks to recruit a Senior
Manager, Communications & Policy Engagement and a
Development Manager.
SENIOR MANAGER, COMMUNICATIONS & POLICY ENGAGEMENT:
The successful candidate will head the communications and
policy engagement unit whose overall purpose is to
coordinate the Center's efforts to enhance the role of
research evidence in policy decisions across the region.
The position will report to the Executive Director and
oversee APHRC's engagement with policy makers at national,
regional and international levels; on-going partnerships
with media houses and advocacy groups; and the publication
of general audience materials aimed at enhancing the
visibility of APHRC and its work.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Develop and oversee implementation of a robust
communication and policy engagement strategy;
2. Develop and implement annual policy engagement and
communication plans;
3. Forge and manage partnerships with key regional bodies,
international development partners and professional
networks;
4. Forge and manage partnerships with the media and
strengthening the capacity of journalists to understand
and effectively report research results;
5. Collaborate with civil society organizations and with
local, national and international networks to influence
agendas in core program and research areas of the
Center;
6. Support the Center's fundraising efforts including
writing proposals for funding to promote the center's
policy engagement and communication activities;
7. Plan and ensure continuous communication and feedback
to communities involved in research programs;
8. Manage the development of institutional publications
including annual reports, newsletters, policy briefs
and other promotional materials;
9. Conduct workshops to bring together researchers,
policymakers and program implementers to bridge the
research-policy-action gap;
10. Conduct training workshops with policy makers and other
potential end-users of research findings to promote
greater understanding and use of research evidence;
11. Engage and strengthen linkages with high level
committees and commissions on health, urbanization,
population and education.
Essential Skills and Qualifications:
- At least a Masters Degree in a relevant field (e.g
Communications, International Relations, Diplomacy,
Policy analysis, etc);
- At least 7 years of experience in undertaking
communication and policy engagement work at a senior
management level; and
- Excellent writing and verbal skills.
DEVELOPMENT MANAGER:
The overall purpose of the position is to strengthen
APHRC's networking and resource mobilization efforts. The
successful candidate will operate as a key ambassador for
the Center, marketing its values and programs to donors and
other development partners internationally.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manage regular communication and follow-ups with current
and potential funders;
- Market the Center's values and programs to potential
donors;
- Assist with development of grant proposals and reports to
donors;
- Participate in writing, reviewing and revision of
proposals in line with funders' requirements and
recommendations;
- Maintain a database of all project grants, their duration
and monitor timely submission of periodic and final
reports to funders;
- Keep donors appraised of APHRC program initiatives;
- Develop an annual fundraising strategy and budget for
resource mobilization activities;
- Maintain regular contact with the Center's researchers
and other program staff to develop project ideas and
discuss fundraising strategies and approaches; and
- Represent the Center in public forums and meetings with
partners and donors.
Education Qualification:
- Masters degree in international relations, any social
science or related fields.
Experience and Skills:
- At least 5 years of experience in carrying out similar
work in an international NGO;
- Excellent proposal development and report writing skills;
- Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal);
and
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
