         Director of Impact Evaluation and Monitoring (DIEM)

                Reporting to: Chief Financial Officer


     KickStart-International is an award winning non-profit with
     a mission to take millions of people in Africa out of
     poverty. It designs low-cost capital equipment and mass-
     markets it to very poor entrepreneurs who buy the
     equipment, and use it to start highly profitable small-
     scale businesses. KickStart's best selling, human-powered,
     "MoneyMaker" irrigation pumps have already enabled more
     than 60,000 farmers to move from subsistence to commercial
     farming, grow high value fruits and vegetables throughout
     the year, and escape from poverty.


     HOW YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE:

     KickStart is a data and impacts driven organization that
     uses an innovative system to monitor the socio-economic
     impacts of its market based program. We are now looking to
     hire a full-time Director of Impact Evaluation and
     Monitoring (DIEM) to lead the process of further
     innovating, upgrading and expanding its impact measurement
     systems.


     JOB DESCRIPTION:

     Your primary responsibilities will be to:

     - Build the capacity and manage KickStart's impact
       monitoring team
     - Design, supervise and manage KickStart's improved impact
       monitoring (IM) and impact evaluation systems
     - Design and manage an electronic data collection and
       analysis system
     - Lead the integration of the impact monitoring data
       collection and analysis with KickStart's enterprise wide
       MIS
     - Analyze impact data
     - Write KickStart impact reports and present the results on
       a regular basis to KickStart's management, donors, and a
       diverse audience of other stakeholders

     Additionally, you will work closely with, and supervise,
     IFPRI (http://www.ifpri.org) - which KickStart hired on a 3
     year contract to assist with this work and to act as an
     external auditor of its impacts. Together with IFPRI, and
     KickStart's impact monitoring staff, the DIEM will design
     and implement a detailed evaluation of KickStart's impacts,
     and will develop, put in place, and manage an improved
     state-of-the-art impact monitoring system. Outcomes of our
     collaboration with IFPRI will include publishing the
     results of the detailed evaluation of KickStart's impacts
     in a peer-reviewed academic journal.


     WHAT IT TAKES:

     Our ideal candidate will have a doctorate in Economics or
     Agricultural Economics, or a master's degree in the same
     with 3-5 years of experience. S/he will be hands-on and
     self-directed. The candidate will enjoy getting out in the
     field just as much as s/he appreciates the strategic
     aspects of the position.


     JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

     The ideal candidate will have:

     - Proven Leadership qualities
     - People and communications skills
     - Strong knowledge of statistical techniques and ideas
     - Experience in analyzing household survey data
     - Significant experience with impact evaluation methods
     - Experience implementing impact monitoring and evaluation
       systems
     - Experience in working with medium and small holder rural
       entrepreneurs and farmers in developing countries, with
       special emphasis on Sub Saharan Africa
     - Experience using Statistical, Survey and Database
       Software
     - Experience using GIS and Mapping Software
     - Fluency in English
     - Willingness to live and work in Kenya with frequent
       travel to Mali and Tanzania

     Preferred skills or experiences include:

     - Experience working with complex household data sets from
       developing countries containing data on income,
       consumption, nutrition, education and health
     - Experience with Living Standard Measuring Surveys from
       Sub Saharan Africa
     - Field experience in collecting and analyzing quantitative
       and qualitative household data in Sub-Saharan Africa
     - Experience with collecting and mapping GPS data and the
       use of hand-held electronic devices for data collection
       and input
     - Fluency in Kiswahili and/or French
