CONFERENCE 2009
LABOUR MARKET DYNAMICS AND GROWTH
CONFERENCE ON STRUCTURAL MODELS OF THE LABOR MARKET
AND POLICY ANALYSIS
Sandbjerg Manor, Denmark
October 8-11, 2009
OBJECTIVES OF THE CONFERENCE:
This conference is held as part of the project Labour Market
Dynamic Growth which is carried out by Professor Dale T.
Mortensen.
The purpose of the conference is to bring together the top
labor and macro economists in the world working on
structural labor market models for the purpose of
presenting their work to their peers. Structural models are
mathematical constructs intended to capture the principal
interactions between supply and demand in the labor market
that can be calibrated or estimated using available data.
Modern versions of these models deal explicitly with
incomplete information, job search and recruiting behavior,
and other market frictions that have important effects on
the performance of the labor market. Relevant performance
measures include both the level and distribution of
unemployment and earnings across households. Quantitative
models of this kind are essential for the informed analysis
of economic policies such as income and payroll taxes,
income support programs, and mandated employment protection
legislation. Although many policy questions of this kind
are posed at the level of economy, obtaining reliable
estimates of the parameters of these models requires
detailed information about individual workers and employer
histories such as that found in Danish panel and matched
employer-employee data.
This is the fourth meeting of this type held in the last 5
years. Earlier meetings of those who work on structure
labor market modeling and estimation were organized by
Richard Rogerson and Nobel Prize Winner Ed Prescott at the
University of Arizona, by Giuseppe Moscarini and Michael
Kenne at Yale University, and by Costas Meghir and Jean-
Marc Robin at University College London. At each meeting we
have made a particular effort to attract young researchers
who are currently developing and applying structural labour
market models as well as established leaders in the field.
The intent of the leadership is to continue with
conferences designed to improve the scientific
underpinnings of this work.
This year there will be a PhD course following the
conference from October 11-14, 2009: Topics in Labor Market
Dynamics.
