                CONSUMER BEHAVIOR AND PAYMENT CHOICE
                           SUMMER WORKSHOP

     The Boston Fed invites submissions for a one-day summer
     workshop on consumer behavior and payment choice. Agenda

     The new workshop format is designed to encourage
     submissions of research at early stages of development and
     to provide an informal environment that promotes extensive
     interaction and exchange of ideas. The Bank continues to
     seek new and innovative research on all consumer-related
     aspects of the payments system, the demand for payments,
     and related consumer financial decisions.


     TOPICS:

     Following is a representative, but not exclusive, list of
     the potential paper topics:

     - Consumer adoption of payment instruments and related
       technologies.
     - Consumers' decisions to use cash, checks, credit cards,
       debit cards, stored value cards, Internet banking, ACH,
       and other forms of payment.
     - The impact of consumers' payment choices on consumption,
       saving, and debt.
     - Implications of behavioral economics for consumer payment
       choices.
     - Pricing of payment instruments.
     - Consumer perceptions and misperceptions about
       characteristics of payment instruments, such as cost,
       safety, speed, timing, and records.
     - The effects of merchant payment acceptance on consumer
       payment choice.
     - The relationship between the use of payment technologies
       and the pricing of goods and services.
     - The impact of payment technologies on shopping time,
       budgeting, and other consumer or household behavior.
     - Consumer financial literacy.
     - The relationship between consumer demand for payment
       technologies and consumer portfolio management.
     - International differences in consumer payment supply and
       demand.
     - International/cross-border consumer payments and
       transfers, including remittances.
