      Research Postgraduate Studies in Accounting and Finance


     Applications from suitably qualified candidates are now
     invited for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of
     Philosophy (MPhil) Programmes offered by the School of
     Accounting and Finance.


     OBJECTIVES:

     (1)  Educate high quality PhD, MPhil students in accounting
          and finance using an interdisciplinary approach;
     (2)  Prepare students for a career in academic research and
          teaching; and
     (3)  Enable students to pursue a research or consulting
          career in accounting and finance.

     There is a solid core of academics in accounting, finance,
     economics and corporate law who can provide supervision.
     Since a major emphasis is on interdisciplinary research,
     students have a supervisory committee made up of three
     academics from at least two different disciplines with one
     of them being the chief supervisor. Information on the

     SUPPORT:

     (1)  Financial support for full-time research students in
          the form of a monthly stipend of about HK$12,800
          (subject to revision) over the normal study period.
     (2)  Tuition scholarships for eligible students with
          outstanding academic records.
     (3)  Opportunities to attend international conferences.
     (4)  Accommodation at the Student Residential Hall
     (5)  Access to excellent library, computing and other
          facilities.


     ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

     Applicants for the PhD Programme are expected to have a
     Master's degree or equivalent in a business field from a
     recognized university. Applicants who have a Bachelor's
     degree with first class honours or equivalent in a business
     field or advanced degrees in other fields will also be
     considered for admission to the PhD Programme on an
     exceptional basis. Applicants from disciplines other than
     business are expected to have basic background knowledge in
     the following three areas at the time of admission: (a)
     Quantitative Methods (b) Microeconomics and (c) Accounting
     and Finance.

     Applicants who have not obtained a degree from a recognized
     university of which the language of instruction is English
     are normally required to obtain a score of 6.0 or above in
     the IELTS (International English Language Testing System);
     or a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of
     at least 550 or above/a computer-based TOEFL (after 1998)
     score of at least 213 or above/at least 79 in the
     internet-based test. Applicants need to submit GRE
     (Graduate Record Examination) or GMAT (Graduate Management
     Admission Test) scores.


     ADMISSION ARRANGEMENT:

     Students are normally admitted in September (Semester One)
     or January (Semester Two) each year.

     The School of Accounting and Finance has particular
     research strengths in the following areas:

     (a)  Corporate Finance and Capital Markets
     (b)  Corporate Governance and Auditing
     (c)  Economics and Law
     (d)  Financial Reporting and International Accounting
     (e)  Managerial Accounting and Information Systems
