Universita Bocconi, Milan, PhD School
PhD in Business Administration and Management

Our PhD is a 4 year full time program designed for highly qualified and motivated students who wish to acquire world-class research skills. Bocconi's PhD program is uniquely multidisciplinary, pragmatic and eclectic. It is multidisciplinary, as it combines insights from a variety of disciplines related to management studies. It is pragmatic, because it emphasizes the abilities necessary to integrate different approaches in order to solve relevant problems in a rigorous manner. It is eclectic, because it provides the skills necessary to understand which specific tools and theories are necessary to solve different problems.

Our first year students acquire a broad set of theoretical and methodological skills (e.g. statistics, econometrics, grounded theory, survey design and implementation, etc.) pertaining to all the fields of management studies. In the second year, our students choose their field of specialization (e.g. Strategic Management, Technology and Innovation Management, Marketing, Organization Theory). The third and fourth year are entirely dedicated to research. Students are expected to shape their research agenda through interaction with the faculty and their advisors. They will acquire teaching expertise in their chosen fields. Our PhD classes are enriched by the interaction among students from all over the world, with background in management and economics, but also other disciplines such as psychology and sociology.

The faculty members have been awarded their PhD in some of the most important international schools (such as Stanford, Wharton, Yale, IESE, etc.) and are highly productive in terms of international publications. They contribute to the international debate by publishing in and serving the editorial board of leading research journals, such as: The Academy of Management Journal; The Academy of Management Review; Administrative Science Quarterly; Journal of Consumer Research; Management Science; Organization Science; Research Policy and many others.

In terms of placement, in recent years our students have been hired by prestigious schools such as: Michigan State University; Penn State University, Aston Business School; Imperial College Business School; Carlos III, Cass Business School, Tilburg University, HEC Paris, Catolica Lisbon, Skema Business School, Australian School of Business, Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon, ETH Zurich and others.
