Associate Dean, International and Comparative Legal Studies

The George Washington University Law School is searching for an Associate Dean for International and Comparative Legal Studies and Burnett Family Professorial Lecturer in International and Comparative Law and Policy. This position is responsible for directing one of the nation’s premier programs in international and comparative law. The program is built on the vision that contemporary lawyering requires professional competence in the international dimensions of legal practice and theory.

The Associate Dean will collaborate with other departments and personnel, under the leadership of the Dean, the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and the Senior Associate Dean for Administrative Affairs.

JOB DESCRIPTION: The core duties and responsibilities of the Associate Dean include:
- Maintains and enhances the scholarly reputation of the International and Comparative Law Program by conducting conferences, workshops, and lectures in the fields of international and comparative law, with particular emphasis on facilitating, promoting, and publicizing the research and other work product of program faculty, alumni, students, visitors, and staff.
- In collaboration with other Law School constituencies, develops and administers the LL.M. Program in International and Comparative Law, with an eye towards increasing applications, as well as recruiting and retaining LL.M. candidates; collaborates in the development of the curriculum; develops opportunities for new income-generating online offerings; and determines the needs for new appointments, including of adjunct faculty, and fulfilling the Law School’s commitment to faculty diversity and inclusion.
- Works with the development and alumni relations offices at the Law School and the University in pursuing public and private sources of external funding, including from alumni and foundations.
- Collaborates with other Law School offices, e.g., the Graduate Programs Office, the Dean of Students Office, and the Career Development Office, etc., in offering academic and professional advice to all students with respect to international and comparative law courses, internships, exchange programs, summer programs, and job opportunities.
- Develops and maintains outreach to major institutions, such as the American Society of International Law, the U.S. Department of State, the World Bank, law firms, and foreign law schools and governments.
- Works with other University schools on new initiatives in areas of common interest and expertise; and develops internal and external program publicity.

Other duties and responsibilities may also include:
- Overseeing and supervising LL.M. theses and SJD dissertations on topics of international and comparative law.
- Develops and administers special programs or projects for training and research in the field, including international agreements with foreign universities, in coordination with the Associate Provost for International Programs. Manages and promotes the visiting foreign scholars program.
- Co-directs the Oxford Summer Program in International Human Rights Law and assists in the administration of other foreign study programs for credit.
- Promotes alumni events in the United States and other countries, in coordination with the Alumni Office, and performs other work related duties as assigned.
- Applicants must have a law degree and substantial experience in the field commensurate with appointment at the rank of Associate Dean. Additional requirements for this position include a commitment to excellence in international and comparative law and legal education; a willingness to lead innovative educational programs and foster development of new teaching initiatives; and a demonstration of strong leadership and administrative skills, as well as the ability to work well within multidisciplinary teams in a diverse environment.
- Performs other work related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 7 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 5 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

- JD degree
- Substantial experience in the field commensurate with an Associate Dean level.
- Commitment to excellence in international and comparative law and legal education.
- Ability to lead innovative educational programs and foster the development of new initiatives.
- Strong leadership and administrative skills.
- Ability to work within multidisciplinary teams in a diverse environment.
