The Peter A. Allard School of Law at the University of British Columbia is undertaking an external search to recruit and nominate a Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in International Law and/or Human Rights Law. The CRC is focused on any aspect of public or private international law or international legal theory or on human rights, which may include international human rights law; domestic human rights law; comparative human rights law; the study of national, regional and international institutions that monitor and implement human rights obligations; or human rights theory and practice.

JOB DESCRIPTION: This is a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Full Professor, Associate Professor or Assistant Professor. In keeping with the provisions of the CRC program, candidates must normally be within 10 years of the completion of their final degree at the time of taking up the appointment. Entry level candidates will not be considered. Our preference is to appoint at the Full or Associate Professor level, although candidates with several years of full-time teaching experience and a strong research record well beyond their graduate work can be considered for appointment at the Assistant Professor level if not yet appointable at the Associate level.

The Canadian Federal Government established the CRC program (http://www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/home-accueil-eng.aspx) to attract outstanding researchers to Canada's universities. Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars normally fewer than 10 years from their highest degree. Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree and have had career breaks (maternity/parental leave, illness) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 assessed though the program's Tier 2 justification process. JOB QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will have an LLB, JD, or equivalent law degree and, absent exceptional circumstances, a completed PhD or SJD or other doctoral degree in law or a related discipline. The successful candidate will have an outstanding academic profile, including scholarly publications and research plans that demonstrate the potential to contribute to the nationally and internationally acclaimed record of research and scholarship at one of Canada's premier law schools. In addition to developing an international research agenda, the successful candidate will be expected to be an effective teacher and mentor of JD and graduate students, to teach in the core curriculum, and to assume a leadership role within the Allard School of Law.

The appointment will commence July 1, 2018, with a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications.
