Abstract
The November 2014 symposium at Washington and Lee University School of Law, Roe at 40: The Controversy Continues, aimed for balance, both in its presentations and in its sponsorship. This brief introduction explains why this goal, which I believe was achieved, was viewed as worthwhile. Balance is a worthy objective not only for educational reasons, but also because a balanced event provides opportunities for disputants to relate to one another on an ordinary human level. This in turn offers the hope of softening those angry and harsh aspects of public discourse that participants on all sides find so disagreeable.
